Spray Valley Provincial Park, AB, Canada
Spray Valley Provincial Park is approximately 16 km south of Canmore (20 minutes) via Highway 742 and about 1.5-2 hours from Calgary via Highway 1 west. Two main access routes serve the park: Highway 40 (paved) leads to Eau Claire Campground 40 km south of Highway 1, while Highway 742 (gravel, dusty) connects Canmore to Spray Lakes West Campground. The gravel surface, mountain pass elevation of 1,909 m, and variable weather conditions require caution, particularly for larger RVs. Calgary International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent visitors.
Summer (June through September) is ideal for camping and hiking, when both campgrounds are open and trails are snow-free. July and August offer the warmest weather, though temperatures remain cool at elevation with average highs around 18-19 degrees Celsius. Shoulder seasons in May and early September provide fewer crowds and beautiful scenery, though Highway 742 experiences nightly wildlife closures from March through mid-June (8 p.m. to 8 a.m.). Winter visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on designated trails, with limited winter camping available at Eau Claire.
