Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, CA, United States
The park is located on Highway 101, 1.5 miles north of Leggett, California. From the south, it is approximately 180 miles (3 hours) from San Francisco. From the north, it is about 90 miles (1.5 hours) from Eureka. The nearest commercial airport is Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, approximately 150 miles south. RVs must not exceed 27 feet in length (trailers capped at 24 feet). Highway 101 through this region is a two-lane road without significant weight restrictions or tunnels.
May through October offers the best RV camping experience, with May-June and September-October providing mild temperatures (61-70°F) and lower rainfall. Summer months (July-August) are warmer but very dry with minimal precipitation. Winter (November-February) brings heavy rainfall; however, at least one campground loop stays open year-round. Note that some trails and facilities on the west bank of the river are seasonal, accessible only after a seasonal bridge is installed in summer.

A 2-mile moderate loop hike (summer-only due to seasonal bridge and river crossings) leading to the park's iconic 225-foot-tall, 1,200-year-old Captain Miles Standish redwood tree. An easy 1.7-mile self-guided loop accessible year-round that offers 360-degree views of the forested skyline and an excellent introduction to the park's ecology. The river features calm swimming holes with sandy bottoms and varying water depths, particularly popular on hot summer days. No lifeguards are present. Children must be supervised.
