Late May through early September offers the warmest water, full campground services, and the best conditions for boating and swimming at the reservoir. July and August see the highest temperatures and the busiest weekends, so midweek stays are easier for larger rigs. Spring and early fall are strong shoulder seasons for fishing, birding, and quieter sites, though nights can be cold and reservoir levels may be drawn down. Winters are cold and snowy, with limited services and frozen water at the reservoir.

Steinaker Reservoir is a warm-water lake that supports motorboating, water skiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, and paddleboarding from a paved boat ramp inside the park. Summer water temperatures are some of the warmest in northeastern Utah, drawing day-use visitors from Vernal.
The reservoir is a popular fishery for rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and bluegill, with shoreline access near the campground and day-use areas. A Utah fishing license is required and can be purchased in Vernal.
A designated sandy swim beach with picnic tables, shade shelters, and restrooms sits along the reservoir shoreline. It is a convenient stop for families traveling between Vernal and Flaming Gorge.
Steinaker is a designated International Dark Sky Park, offering dark skies well suited to astronomy. It is one of ten certified Utah state parks in a state with the highest concentration of certified dark sky parks and communities in the country, and rangers and partners occasionally host telescope programs on site.
The reservoir and adjoining wetlands attract a wide range of waterfowl and raptors. Open water and shallow shoreline habitat at Steinaker host seasonal visits from osprey, ducks, geese, and wading birds, with deer and other wildlife common along the shoreline trails.
Dinosaur National Monument is roughly a 30-minute drive east of the park and preserves the Carnegie Quarry wall of Jurassic-era fossils along with scenic canyons of the Green and Yampa rivers. The monument has paved roads suitable for RVs to the Quarry Visitor Center area.
This scenic drive leaves the Vernal area and climbs north through Ashley National Forest to Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The byway crosses the Ashley National Forest between Vernal and Manila, with a segment crossing Flaming Gorge Dam, and offers wide-ranging views of canyons, forests, and wildlife habitat.
Red Fleet State Park is a short drive north of Steinaker and features striking red sandstone formations around a smaller reservoir, plus a notable dinosaur trackway. It pairs well with a Steinaker stay for anglers and paddlers looking for a quieter second lake.
