Late spring through early fall, roughly May through September, is the best window for RV travel to Stemwinder, when Highway 3 is clear of winter conditions and the Similkameen Valley enjoys warm, dry weather. July and August bring the warmest temperatures and reliable river access, though these are also the busiest months for the small campground. Shoulder months of May, June, and September offer cooler nights, fewer crowds, and more availability for walk-in sites. Winter visits are limited, as the campground operates seasonally.

Shoreline fishing along the Similkameen River is a signature activity at Stemwinder. Anglers like to try their luck from the rocky shoreline. A valid British Columbia freshwater fishing licence is required, and regulations on the Similkameen include seasonal bait bans and catch-and-release rules for wild rainbow trout. bcparks.ca/stemwinder-park/
The day-use area beside the Similkameen River offers a shaded, pine-dotted setting for picnics and relaxing. Tables and vehicle parking are available right off Highway 3, making it a convenient RV-friendly stop for travellers on the Crowsnest route. bcparks.ca/stemwinder-park/
The mix of ponderosa pine forest, river corridor, and dry canyon slopes attracts songbirds, raptors, and mule deer. Early morning and evening from the campground loop are the best times to spot wildlife. bcparks.ca/stemwinder-park/
The nearby village of Hedley is a former gold-mining town with preserved buildings, a museum, and views of the historic Mascot Mine perched on the cliffs above. It is only a few minutes east of the park by RV.
Bromley Rock Provincial Park is a popular swimming and picnicking spot on the Similkameen River. The park is located 21 km east of Princeton on Highway 3, with Princeton as the nearest community. It is an easy drive west from Stemwinder for a change of scenery. bcparks.ca/bromley-rock-park/
Cathedral Provincial Park, south of Keremeos, offers alpine lakes and backcountry hiking within driving distance of Stemwinder. RVers typically base at Stemwinder or nearby campgrounds and day-trip to the park's lower trailhead.
The stretch of Highway 3 between Keremeos and Cawston is known as the organic farming capital of Canada, with fruit stands, wineries, and farm markets. Many have pull-in parking that accommodates smaller RVs.
First time renting a camper and it could not have gone smoother. The couple minor issues that came up were fixed by Chester quickly and he kept an open line for questions and advice.

Wonderful hosts, great communication and spacious! Christine and Mike were very kind and easy to communicate with. They had the RV set up prior to our check in and even set out an outdoor carpet and chairs for us. Everything worked great. Would definitely rent again!

Stemwinder Provincial Park, BC, Canada
The park sits directly along Highway 3 (the Crowsnest), 8 km west of Hedley and 35 km east of Princeton, roughly a 30 minute drive from Princeton. Keremeos is about 50 km east, and Penticton is approximately 1.5 hours northeast via Highway 3A. RV drivers should be prepared for long mountain grades on Highway 3, including the climb over Sunday Summit west of Princeton and the Richter Pass area further east, plus narrow shoulders through the Similkameen Canyon. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travellers is Kelowna International Airport (YLW), about 2.5 to 3 hours away by road.
