Stuart Island Marine State Park, WA, United States
Stuart Island is accessible only by watercraft, so RV renters cannot drive to the park itself. The standard approach is to drive an RV to Anacortes, Washington (roughly 85 miles and 2 hours north of Seattle), take the Washington State Ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, then launch a private boat, charter, or kayak for the short crossing to Stuart. The Roche Harbor Resort boat ramp on San Juan Island is the nearest launch site, and local launch fees apply. RV drivers should note ferry vehicle length and height fees, reserve vehicle space in advance during summer, and plan for Bellingham International or Seattle-Tacoma International as the nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips.
Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather in the San Juan Islands and the calmest conditions for small-boat and kayak crossings to Stuart Island. July and August bring peak boater traffic, so mooring buoys and dock space fill quickly on weekends. May, June, and September are strong shoulder months with fewer crowds, cooler nights, and better campsite availability for RV travelers staging on San Juan Island. Winter visits are possible but weather on Haro Strait can turn quickly, limiting safe crossings.
Wet and windy. Crossings weather-dependent; park open but services minimal.
Cool and damp. Off-season boating conditions.
Early spring; unsettled seas on Haro Strait.
Drier conditions begin; good for early-season kayakers.
Shoulder season with fewer boaters.
Pleasant; campsite availability still good midweek.
Peak season. Expect full buoys and docks on weekends.
Peak boating month; book ferries and rentals early.
Excellent shoulder-season conditions.
Rainy season resumes; check marine forecasts.
Wet and windy with short daylight.
Stormy. Crossings often unsafe for small craft.
The Turn Point Light Station, built in 1893, stands on the western end of Stuart Island and continues to serve mariners of the Salish Sea. The site is open year round and a small interpretive museum operated by the Turn Point Lighthouse Preservation Society is open seasonally in summer. blm.gov/visit/turn-point
Turn Point is one of the best places on BLM-managed lands to see orca whales. The bluffs above Haro Strait offer long sightlines toward pods that travel the international boundary waters. blm.gov/visit/turn-point
Two harbors are available for visitors to anchor in, making Stuart Island a favorite overnight stop in the San Juans. Reid Harbor on the south and Prevost Harbor on the north each offer mooring buoys, docks, and shoreline access to the campground and trail system. parks.wa.gov/
Forested trails connect Reid and Prevost Harbors to Turn Point, running along bluffs with views of Haro Strait and the Canadian Gulf Islands. Recreational activities in the area include hiking, camping, boating, sea kayaking, watching wildlife, and viewing wildflowers. blm.gov/visit/turn-point
The Roche Harbor Resort boat ramp on San Juan Island is the nearest launch site, and local launch fees apply. Experienced kayakers cross Spieden Channel to reach Stuart Island, timing the trip to slack current. blm.gov/visit/turn-point
Popular activities include fishing and crabbing in the waters surrounding the island. A current Washington State fishing license and shellfish endorsement are required, and seasons vary by species. nps.gov/places/stuart-island-marine-state-park.htm
The park has 18 campsites, 4 of which are reserved for sailboat or kayak users exclusively. Sites are walk-in from the harbor shoreline and have no hookups, running water, or RV access. nps.gov/places/stuart-island-marine-state-park.htm
