Best time to visit Sweet Run State Park

Spring (April and May) and fall (October and early November) are the best times to visit, offering mild temperatures, wildflowers, fall foliage on the Blue Ridge, and cooler trail conditions. Summer brings warm humid weather, ticks, and afternoon thunderstorms, though early mornings are pleasant. Winter access is possible since the park is open year-round for day use, but trails can be muddy or icy after storms. Shoulder seasons also mean lighter weekend traffic on narrow rural roads, a plus for RV drivers.

  • Hike the Sweet Run Loop Trails Easy
    RV parking available

The park offers more than 10 miles of interconnected hiking trails winding through meadows, hardwood forest, and along Sweet Run and Piney Run creeks. Loops can be combined for short family walks or half-day hikes. Trailheads begin at the main parking area.

  • Climb to Short Hill Ridge Viewpoints Moderate
    RV parking available

Upper trails climb the western slope toward Short Hill Mountain, rewarding hikers with seasonal views over the Loudoun Valley and the Potomac water gap. The ascent is steady and rocky in spots. Best attempted in cooler months when leaves are off.

  • Birding and Wildlife Viewing Easy
    RV parking available

The mix of open fields, streams, and mature forest makes Sweet Run one of Loudoun County's top birding spots. Visitors may see bluebirds, woodpeckers, raptors, and white-tailed deer. Bring binoculars and hike early for the best sightings.

  • Explore Historic Farmsteads Easy
    RV parking available

The property preserves several 19th-century farm buildings and stone walls dating from its agricultural past. Interpretive signs along the trails describe the land's history as a working Piedmont farm. It is a quiet walk suitable for all ages.

  • Horseback Riding on Shared Trails Moderate

Many of the park's multi-use trails are open to equestrians, with a separate horse trailer parking area. Riders must bring their own stock since no rentals are on site. Check DCR rules before visiting.

  • Picnic at the Day-Use Area Easy
    RV parking available

A small picnic area near the main parking lot provides tables and shade for a packed lunch. There are no concessions in the park, so supplies should be bought in Purcellville or Hillsboro. Pack out all trash.

  • Day Trip to Harpers Ferry Easy
    RV parking available

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is a short drive north across the Potomac River and pairs well with a morning hike at Sweet Run. Visitors can explore Civil War history, the Appalachian Trail, and river overlooks. Larger RVs should park at the visitor center shuttle lot.

We had a fantastic experience with Obi’s RV. It is a great RV, in excellent condition and really easy to drive and stay in. It is comfortable and spacious and Obi’s communication was excellent. Both he and his wife are lovely people and were incredibly helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole experience from booking through to return. I would highly recommend.

How to get to Sweet Run State Park

The park sits in far northwestern Loudoun County, roughly 15 minutes from Purcellville, 25 minutes from Leesburg, and about 60 to 75 minutes from the Washington, D.C. beltway via Route 7 and Route 9. Drivers approaching from the east on Route 9 should note winding two-lane roads, rolling grades, and the narrow historic village of Hillsboro, which can be tight for longer rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Washington Dulles International (IAD), about 35 to 40 miles east; Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, is only a short drive north across the Potomac. There are no tunnels or low clearances on the main approach, but RVers should avoid cut-through back roads and stick to numbered state routes.
