Late June through August offers the warmest weather, the fullest slate of ranger programs, and the best swimming conditions on the bay. May and September are strong shoulder-season choices for RVers, with cooler nights, thinner crowds, and excellent birding during migration. October brings fall color but cooler lake temperatures and reduced services. Winter visitors should expect snow, cold winds off Lake Huron, and limited facilities.

The Tawas Point Lighthouse is a historic 19th-century beacon that anchors the tip of the peninsula and is open for seasonal tours. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of Lake Huron and the bay. The lighthouse grounds are within easy walking distance of the campground.
Sandy Hook Nature Trail is a short, flat interpretive loop that winds from near the lighthouse out toward the sandy point through dunes and coastal habitat. The trail is excellent for birdwatching during migration seasons. Expect soft sand in some sections.
Tawas Point has two sandy beaches, one on the protected bay side with shallow, warm water and another facing open Lake Huron. The bay beach is popular with families for its gentle wade-in shoreline. Picnic areas and restrooms are nearby.
The peninsula is one of Michigan's premier migratory birding sites, funneling warblers, shorebirds, and raptors in spring and fall. The park hosts an annual birding festival in the spring. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended.
Tawas Bay offers fishing for walleye, perch, smallmouth bass, and pike from shore or boat. Anglers can cast from the beach or launch small craft from nearby public ramps in East Tawas. A Michigan fishing license is required.
Paved roads and low-traffic neighborhoods around the park make for pleasant cycling, and riders can connect to routes leading into East Tawas. The terrain is flat and suitable for all skill levels. Several paved paths parallel US-23 along the shoreline.
The nearby town of East Tawas offers a walkable downtown with shops, restaurants, a city park, and a long public pier on Tawas Bay. It is a short drive or bike ride from the state park. The pier is a popular spot for sunset views and fishing.

Tawas Point State Park, MI, United States
The park sits just east of East Tawas on Tawas Beach Road, about 3 to 4 hours north of Detroit via I-75 and US-23 and roughly 2.5 hours northeast of Grand Rapids. The access roads are flat and RV-friendly with no mountain passes, tunnels, or significant grades, though the final stretch on Tawas Beach Road is a two-lane residential route where drivers should watch for pedestrians and cyclists. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is MBS International Airport in Saginaw, about 90 minutes south, with Detroit Metropolitan Airport as a larger alternative. Check local road conditions in winter and early spring when lake-effect snow can affect US-23.
