Late May through mid-September is the prime window, when daytime highs are warm enough for swimming and water sports and all campground loops and boat ramps are open. July and August bring the busiest weekends and the best walleye and bass fishing, so midweek arrivals help RVers secure a site. Shoulder months of May and September offer cooler nights, lighter crowds, and strong fall fishing, but winds across the open reservoir can be strong. Winter use is limited, with ice fishing possible but most services reduced.

Tongue River Reservoir is one of Montana's top warm-water fisheries, producing walleye, crappie, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and catfish. Anglers fish from boats, the shoreline, and the dam area, and the park hosts several walleye tournaments each summer.
The roughly 12-mile-long reservoir supports motorboating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Multiple boat ramps and a marina give RV campers direct water access close to the campground loops.
Designated swim and day-use areas offer calm coves for families during the hot summer months. Picnic tables and shoreline access make it easy to spend an afternoon between campsite and water.
Red scoria cliffs, rimrocks, and juniper breaks line the reservoir and surrounding uplands. Short informal walks from the campgrounds lead to overlooks of the reservoir and the Tongue River canyon below the dam.
The reservoir corridor supports mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn, wild turkeys, pelicans, bald eagles, and a variety of waterfowl. Early mornings near the inlet and along the shoreline are the most productive times.
When safe ice forms, the reservoir becomes a regional ice-fishing destination for walleye, perch, and crappie. RV access in winter is limited, and visitors should check conditions before traveling.
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is roughly an hour's drive northwest of the park, making it a practical day trip from an RV basecamp. The site preserves the location of the 1876 battle and includes a visitor center, driving tour, and overlooks.

Tongue River Reservoir State Park, MT, United States
The park sits off Montana Highway 314 near Decker, roughly 25 miles northeast of Sheridan, Wyoming (about a 40-minute drive) and 70 miles south of Miles City, Montana (roughly 1 hour 30 minutes). From Billings, Montana, plan on about 2 hours 30 minutes via I-90 east and MT-314 south. RV drivers should note that the final approach includes rural two-lane highways and a gravel access road with rolling grades, and the park entrance road descends to the reservoir, so trailer brakes and low-gear descents matter. The nearest airports for fly-and-rent trips are Sheridan County Airport (SHR) and Billings Logan International Airport (BIL).
