Late June through August offers the warmest weather, full campground services, and reliable swimming at nearby Townshend Lake. September into early October is a top choice for RV travelers thanks to crisp air, lighter crowds, and peak fall foliage in the West River valley. Late May and early June are quieter shoulder weeks, though nights can be cold and biting insects are most active. The campground is closed in winter, so trip planning should focus on the May-to-October season.

A loop trail that climbs from the campground to the 1,680-foot summit of Bald Mountain with valley views. The route is roughly 3 miles round-trip with steady elevation gain and a rocky ledge viewpoint near the top.
A sandy swimming beach on the Townshend Reservoir is just a short drive from the park. The day-use area has lifeguards in season, picnic tables, and a large paved lot that accommodates RVs and tow vehicles.
Anglers target trout, bass, and panfish along the West River and in Townshend Reservoir. A Vermont fishing license is required and shore access is easy from several pullouts along Route 30.
Scott Covered Bridge spans the West River just outside the park entrance and is the longest single-span wooden covered bridge in Vermont. The bridge is closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians, with a small parking area nearby.
The flat water of Townshend Reservoir is popular for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. A boat launch on the reservoir provides easy put-in access for car-top boats.
The park's stone ranger station, fireplaces, and trail stonework were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. A short self-guided walk through the campground highlights the rustic architecture still in daily use.
Classic southern Vermont villages sit within a 20-minute drive of the park. Grafton and Newfane offer historic greens, country stores, and small museums that make an easy half-day outing from the campground.

I recently had the pleasure of staying in Lien's camper van for a music festival in Vermont, and I can't emphasize enough how perfectly it met my needs. My four essential requirements for the stay— a clean environment, a comfortable bed, a bathroom, and quality coffee—were not only satisfied but exceeded in every aspect, transforming my experience into one of sheer comfort and enjoyment. In fact, I enjoyed my stay so much that I’ve already booked for next year's festivities! Lien proved to be an exceptional host, embodying warmth and hospitality throughout my stay. She communicated effectively and was always available to address any questions I had, ensuring I felt welcome and well-informed. Her clear instructions prior to my arrival made the check-in process seamless, and she generously took the time to provide a thorough tutorial on the van's systems, which truly enhanced my experience. Furthermore, Lien went above and beyond by supplying plenty of pillows, blankets, and fresh spring water, which added thoughtful touches to my stay. Her attention to detail made all the difference, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the festival atmosphere without any worries. I wholeheartedly recommend her camper van as the perfect 'home away from home' for solo travelers or couples alike. If you're looking for a convenient, comfortable, and fun place to stay, look no further! You won't be disappointed!

Townshend State Park, VT, United States
The park is reached via State Route 30, about 15 minutes (9 miles) northwest of Brattleboro and roughly 2 hours (100 miles) from both Hartford, Connecticut and Albany, New York. Boston is about 2.5 hours east via Route 2 and I-91. RV drivers should note that the final approach crosses the single-lane Scott Covered Bridge area and uses a narrow park access road with a tight, steep entrance, so larger rigs should scout turns and avoid low-clearance covered bridges in the region. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford, with Albany International (ALB) and Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) as alternatives.
