Late June through early September offers the warmest, driest weather and the best conditions for swimming in Hood Canal, which warms notably by midsummer. July and August are peak season, so campsite reservations fill months ahead and weekends are busiest. May, early June, and September are strong shoulder windows for RV travelers seeking milder temperatures, lower demand, and full campground services. Winter visits are quieter but wet, with frequent Pacific storms and limited camping availability.

The park's gently sloping saltwater beach is a defining feature and one of the warmest swimming beaches in Puget Sound. Visitors can wade, swim, beachcomb, and harvest oysters and clams in season with a valid Washington shellfish license. RV parking is available in the day-use lot a short walk from the water.
A short forested trail follows Twanoh Creek upstream past mossy boulders, small cascades, and historic CCC-era stonework. The walk is mellow and family-friendly, winding through second-growth Douglas fir and big-leaf maple. Trailhead parking accommodates standard vehicles; larger rigs should use the day-use lot and walk over.
A concrete boat launch with a seasonal moorage float provides direct access to Hood Canal. Paddlers, anglers, and small-boat owners use it to reach nearby bays and fishing spots. Trailer parking is available near the ramp, with room for tow vehicles.
Twanoh is a popular spot for recreational clam and oyster harvesting along Hood Canal's south shore. Check current season dates and biotoxin closures with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife before digging. A valid shellfish license is required for anyone age 15 and older.
Shaded picnic tables, lawns, and covered shelters sit between the campground and the beach. The area is well suited to group lunches and shoreline gatherings, with restrooms and water nearby. Larger shelters can be reserved through Washington State Parks.
The sheltered waters of lower Hood Canal near Union offer calm conditions for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on settled days. Launch from the park's ramp or beach and explore the shoreline toward Alderbrook and Sund Creek. Check tide and wind forecasts before heading out.
State Route 106 along the south shore is a short, scenic drive with frequent water views, small galleries, and waterfront dining in Union. It pairs well with a visit to the historic Alderbrook Resort area and nearby Hunter Farms. Use pullouts for photos, as shoulders are narrow.
Don and his wife were great hosts! The RV was in great condition, ran well, and they were both easy to communicate with. We were happy to see they even provided amenities such as kitchen appliances, plates, utensils, chairs and a BBQ. We would definitely go through them on our next trip if the RV is available!

The Leggs were really great and we appreciated the supplies that were included. There were camp chairs and even an outdoor grill.

David and family were AWESOME. Provided great convenience, communication and an accurate description and a beautiful RV. If you are going to the Gorge, this is the RV to rent. Quick pickup, drop off and answered all our questions we had throughout the rental!

Rented the RV for a trip to The Gorge. RV was very nice. David was very responsive and answered all our questions. Upon arrival, we were given a walk-through and shown how to operate all the systems. Return was quick and simple. I can't express how great David was throughout the process.

Twanoh State Park, WA, United States
Twanoh State Park sits along State Route 106 on the south shore of Hood Canal, roughly 8 miles east of Union and about 20 to 25 minutes from Shelton via US 101. From Olympia it is about a 45 minute drive, and Seattle is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours via I-5, SR 3, and SR 106. RV drivers should note that SR 106 is a narrow, winding two-lane road with tight curves and limited shoulders, so slow speeds and careful mirror checks are important for larger rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA), about 90 miles to the northeast.
