Late June through early September offers the most reliable weather for hiking Mount Mansfield and using the park's open-air facilities. September and early October are the shoulder-season highlight, with crisp air and peak foliage across the Green Mountains, though weekends book out quickly. May and late October are cool and often wet, and the access road can be muddy or icy outside the official operating season.

Sunset Ridge is the park's signature route to the summit ridge of Mount Mansfield, climbing about 2,500 feet over roughly 3.3 miles one way to the Chin, Vermont's highest point. The upper section breaks into open alpine terrain with long Champlain Valley views. Parking is at the upper lot, which accommodates cars but not large RVs.
The CCC Road is a wide, gated gravel road built by the Civilian Conservation Corps that climbs gradually from the campground toward the toll road junction. It is the easiest walking route in the park and a popular choice for families, leashed dogs, and shoulder-season visitors. The lower trailhead is close to the main parking area.
The Laura Cowles Trail is a direct, steep route up the western face of Mount Mansfield that links with Sunset Ridge for a popular loop to the summit. The trail gains elevation quickly through hardwood and spruce fir forest. Pair it with Sunset Ridge for one of the best day hikes in northern Vermont.
Short connector trails from the campground allow hikers to link the CCC Road with Maple Ridge and other Mansfield routes. These lower paths stay in the forest and are manageable for less experienced hikers. They are a good option when the summit ridge is socked in by weather.
The park's CCC-era stone picnic shelter sits near the day-use area and is one of the best-preserved examples of 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps stonework in Vermont. It offers covered tables, fire pits, and a quiet setting beneath the mountain. Day-use parking is available below the shelter.
The park sits at roughly 1,600 feet on Mount Mansfield's western slope and offers broad westward views across the Champlain Valley toward the Adirondacks. Late September through early October typically brings peak color. The day-use area is an easy foliage stop without committing to a full summit hike.
Because the park has no electrical hookups and limited development, night skies above the campground are notably dark for northern Vermont. The rustic lean-tos and tent sites are spread through a forested hillside. Bring headlamps and warm layers, as temperatures drop quickly after sunset even in summer.
The Rv worked out perfectly! This was our first experience! The host was helpful and immediately responsive to any questions. Unit was clean, well maintained and well appointed. Thank you Tim. We hope you will rent to us again.

Underhill State Park, VT, United States
The park is reached via Pleasant Valley Road and Mountain Road in Underhill Center, about 40 minutes (roughly 25 miles) east of Burlington and about 35 minutes from Stowe via the Smugglers' Notch route. Note that Smugglers' Notch (VT Route 108) is a narrow, twisting mountain pass with tight switchbacks that is closed to trailers, large RVs, and tractor-trailers, and is closed entirely in winter. The final stretch of the park access road is steep, narrow, and gravel, so large motorhomes and travel trailers are not recommended past the lower gate. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
