Van Damme State Park, CA, United States

How to get to Van Damme State Park

Van Damme State Park is located 3 miles south of Mendocino and 18 miles north of Fort Bragg on scenic Highway 1. From San Francisco or Oakland (approximately 3.5 hours, 156 miles) or from Santa Rosa (approximately 2 hours, 100 miles). San Francisco International Airport is the nearest major airport for fly-and-rent visitors. A temporary 10-foot-wide single-lane bridge at the park entrance requires careful navigation for RVs over 30 feet, with trailers needing a right turn and U-turn in the turnaround area, and the maximum RV length is 35 feet. Highway 1 is narrow and winding with limited shoulders and steep drop-offs, so travelers should verify coastal road conditions during winter months.

Best time to visit Van Damme State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest and driest weather, with temperatures around 65 to 72°F and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for camping and outdoor activities including kayaking and hiking. September and May are excellent shoulder seasons with moderate temperatures between 60 and 70°F and thinner crowds. November through March brings significant rainfall and cooler temperatures between 40 and 59°F, but fewer visitors and calm ocean conditions perfect for scuba diving. Winter storms may cause brief Highway 1 closures, so RV travelers should verify coastal road conditions before departing.
