Late May through early October is the most comfortable window, with warm days suited to paddling on Frog Hollow Lake, trail riding, and fishing. June and September are ideal shoulder months for RV travel, offering lighter weekend traffic and cooler evenings. October brings strong fall color in the oak-hickory forest but also deer hunting seasons, so non-hunting visitors should wear blaze orange. Winters are cold and snowy, and campground water systems are shut off in the off-season.

Frog Hollow Lake is a 137-acre no-wake lake at the center of the recreation area, open to boating, paddling, and shoreline fishing. Anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. A concrete boat ramp and paved parking make it accessible to tow vehicles.
Volga River SRA offers more than 25 miles of multi-use trails open to hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Trails wind through oak-hickory forest, restored prairie, and along river bluffs. Several loops start from the equestrian camp and day-use lots.
A dedicated equestrian campground provides direct access to the horse trail network. Sites include hitching posts and room to park trailers. Riders often use this area as a base for multi-day trips through the backcountry.
Nearby cold-water streams in the surrounding Driftless area are stocked with rainbow and brown trout by the Iowa DNR. Anglers can combine a stay at Volga River with day trips to public trout waters within a short drive. A valid Iowa fishing license and trout fee are required.
The recreation area is one of northeast Iowa's larger public hunting grounds, with seasons for deer, turkey, and small game. Non-hunters can spot white-tailed deer, wild turkey, pileated woodpeckers, and migratory songbirds along the trails. Check seasonal regulations and wear blaze orange in fall.
The Volga River flows through the recreation area and offers a quiet, scenic float suitable for canoes and kayaks during normal water levels. Access points are available within and near the park. Water levels can drop in late summer, so check conditions before launching.
Day-use areas near Frog Hollow Lake include shelters, grills, and open lawn space for gatherings. Paved parking accommodates tow vehicles and larger rigs visiting for the day. Shelters can be reserved in advance through the Iowa DNR.

We had a great experience renting from Paige and her husband. Everything went very smoothly! Their camper is beautiful and clean. Paige had a basket full of goodies for us upon arrival. Paige was very quick to respond to any questions on the app. Set up was quick and easy! I would definitely rent from them again!!

Volga River State Recreation Area, IA, United States
The recreation area sits north of Fayette, Iowa, about 45 minutes (35 miles) from Decorah and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes (60 miles) northwest of Dubuque. From Waterloo or Cedar Falls, plan on about 1 hour 15 minutes via US 63 and Iowa 150. Roads in are paved state highways followed by county blacktop and gravel access roads, so low-clearance big rigs should take the interior gravel spurs slowly, especially after heavy rain. The nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Dubuque Regional Airport (DBQ), with larger options at Cedar Rapids (CID) and Rochester, MN (RST).
