Best time to visit Waterbury Center State Park

Late June through August offers the warmest water, full beach operations, and reliable boating conditions on the reservoir. September is a strong shoulder season for RV travelers, with cooler days, thinner crowds, and Vermont's famed fall foliage typically peaking from late September into early October. The park is a seasonal facility that closes in the off-season, so May and mid-October visits may find reduced services or a closed gate. Winter visitation is not supported at the park itself.

Things to do at Waterbury Center State Park

  • Swim at the Sandy Beach Easy
    RV parking available

The park's main attraction is a sandy swimming beach on Waterbury Reservoir with views of the surrounding Green Mountains. Lifeguards are typically on duty during peak summer weeks, and the shallow entry works well for families.

  • Paddle Waterbury Reservoir Easy
    RV parking available

Waterbury Reservoir is a scenic paddling destination with protected coves and forested shoreline. Kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals are available on site in season, and the reservoir connects upstream into remote paddle-in sites managed by Little River State Park.

  • Launch a Small Boat
    RV parking available

A car-top and trailered boat launch provides access to the reservoir for small motorboats, sailboats, and fishing craft. A horsepower limit applies to protect the reservoir, so check current regulations before hauling a larger boat.

  • Picnic with Mountain Views Easy
    RV parking available

Grassy picnic lawns and reservable shelters overlook the water and the peaks of Mount Mansfield and Camel's Hump. It is an easy lunch stop for RVers on a Route 100 foliage tour.

  • Fish for Trout and Bass Easy

Waterbury Reservoir holds rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch. A current Vermont fishing license is required, and anglers can cast from shore at the park or launch from the boat ramp.

  • Hike at Nearby Little River State Park Moderate
    RV parking available

Just across the reservoir, Little River State Park offers the History Hike through the abandoned Ricker Basin settlement and trails into Mount Mansfield State Forest. It is the closest trail network with RV-friendly parking to Waterbury Center.

  • Visit Waterbury and Stowe
    RV parking available

The park sits on the Route 100 corridor between Waterbury village and Stowe, home to cideries, breweries, and the Ben and Jerry's factory. These stops give RV travelers rainy-day alternatives within a short drive of the park.

How to get to Waterbury Center State Park

The park is accessed from Route 100 in Waterbury Center, about 10 minutes north of Interstate 89 (Exit 10) and roughly 30 minutes (25 miles) southeast of Burlington. Montpelier is about 20 minutes (15 miles) to the southeast, and Stowe is 15 minutes north on Route 100. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Burlington International Airport (BTV). RV drivers should note that the park access road is narrow and the beach parking area has limited space for large rigs, and the surrounding Green Mountain routes (Smugglers' Notch on VT 108 north of Stowe) prohibit tractor-trailers and are not recommended for larger motorhomes due to tight switchbacks and low clearances.
