Late May through early October is the prime window, when campground loops are fully open, the beach at Little Falls Lake is staffed, and trails to Willow Falls are dry and clear. July and August bring the warmest water and biggest crowds, so midweek arrivals and advance reservations are wise for peak summer dates. Shoulder months of May, September, and early October offer cooler hiking weather, fall color along the river gorge, and easier site availability. Winter is quiet and cold, with snow-covered trails used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Willow Falls is a multi-tiered cascade on the Willow River and the park's signature attraction. Trails lead from parking areas down to the base of the falls, where swimming and wading are popular in summer.
The park's sand swim beach on Little Falls Lake offers designated swimming, picnic shelters, and a bathhouse. It is the main family hub in summer and has a large day-use parking area suitable for tow vehicles.
This trail climbs from the river valley up to a scenic overlook of the falls and surrounding gorge. Expect stairs and steady elevation gain, with rewarding views from the top.
Burkhardt Trail follows the Willow River downstream through mixed hardwoods and restored prairie. It is a favorite for birdwatching and connects several of the park's other trail loops.
Little Falls Lake is open to canoes, kayaks, and small watercraft with a designated launch area. Paddlers can explore quiet bays and reach stretches of the Willow River upstream.
The Willow River and Little Falls Lake support largemouth bass, panfish, northern pike, and stocked trout in cooler sections. A valid Wisconsin fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
The park nature center hosts interpretive exhibits and seasonal ranger programs on local geology, wildlife, and the river ecosystem. Programs are most frequent on summer weekends.
A portion of the trail network is groomed for cross-country skiing in winter, with snowshoeing permitted on designated routes. The park remains open for day use when campgrounds are closed.

Willow River State Park, WI, United States
The park is located off U.S. Highway 12 and County Road A, roughly 5 miles north of Hudson, Wisconsin, and about 30 miles east of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, via Interstate 94. From Eau Claire, Wisconsin, plan on about 75 miles, or roughly a 1 hour 15 minute drive west on I-94. Park roads are paved and suitable for most RVs, but the approach on County Road A includes rolling hills, and interior campground loops have tree canopy and tight turns that can be challenging for the largest rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), about 35 miles west.
