Best time to visit Willow River State Park

Late May through early October is the prime window, when campground loops are fully open, the beach at Little Falls Lake is staffed, and trails to Willow Falls are dry and clear. July and August bring the warmest water and biggest crowds, so midweek arrivals and advance reservations are wise for peak summer dates. Shoulder months of May, September, and early October offer cooler hiking weather, fall color along the river gorge, and easier site availability. Winter is quiet and cold, with snow-covered trails used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

How to get to Willow River State Park

The park is located off U.S. Highway 12 and County Road A, roughly 5 miles north of Hudson, Wisconsin, and about 30 miles east of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota, via Interstate 94. From Eau Claire, Wisconsin, plan on about 75 miles, or roughly a 1 hour 15 minute drive west on I-94. Park roads are paved and suitable for most RVs, but the approach on County Road A includes rolling hills, and interior campground loops have tree canopy and tight turns that can be challenging for the largest rigs. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), about 35 miles west.
