Best time to visit Woodford State Park

Late June through August offers the most reliable warm weather for swimming at Adams Reservoir, paddling, and using the full campground. Late September into early October is the headline shoulder season, with peak fall foliage along the Molly Stark Scenic Byway and cooler nights ideal for RV travel. Early-season visitors in May should expect cold nights and possible lingering mud, since spring rain and frozen ground keep nearby forest roads soft until mid-spring. Warmer temperatures, spring rain, and deep frozen ground make it difficult for the landscape to absorb water, so most Green Mountain National Forest roads are closed until mid-spring.

Things to do at Woodford State Park

  • Adams Reservoir paddling and fishing Easy
    RV parking available

Adams Reservoir is the small, quiet pond at the heart of the park, ideal for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Anglers fish for bass, perch, and stocked trout from boat or shoreline. Motorboats are restricted to electric motors only, keeping the water calm.

  • Adams Reservoir Trail (shoreline loop) Easy
    RV parking available

This easy loop circles Adams Reservoir on a soft-surface path through spruce-fir forest. The flat profile and short distance make it suitable for families and shorter RV-camp day hikes. Trailhead parking is at the campground day-use area.

  • Swimming beach and day-use area
    RV parking available

A small sand beach on Adams Reservoir offers freshwater swimming during the summer season. Picnic tables, grills, and restrooms are nearby. The day-use lot accommodates trucks and tow vehicles, though larger rigs should park in the campground.

  • Molly Stark Scenic Byway drive Easy
    RV parking available

Vermont Route 9, the Molly Stark Scenic Byway, links Bennington and Wilmington and passes the park entrance. The route is bordered on both sides by National Forest, with enjoyable views in numerous spots along the way. It is best driven in early October for foliage. fs.usda.gov/r09/gmfl/recreation/molly-stark-scenic-byway

  • Bald Mountain Trail (Harbour Road side) Moderate

A moderate hike from the Woodford side reaches the Glastenbury Wilderness ridge with views toward Bennington. The east side of the Bald Mountain trail off Harbour Road in Woodford travels about 2 miles with significant elevation gain to a junction with the West Ridge Trail, following an old road that enters the National Forest, with a spur to a seasonal spring at Bear Wallow, marked with blue blazes. fs.usda.gov/r09/gmfl/recreation/bald-mountain

  • Appalachian Trail and Long Trail crossing Moderate

The combined Appalachian Trail and Long Trail crosses Vermont Route 9 just west of the park, offering out-and-back day hikes from the highway trailhead. The Appalachian Trail is a long-distance public footpath traversing the Appalachian Mountains, managed cooperatively by the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, state agencies, and volunteers. Roadside parking is limited, so arrive early.

  • Historic Bennington day trip

Downtown Bennington is roughly 10 miles west and offers the Bennington Battle Monument, covered bridges, and the Bennington Museum. The drive down Route 9 makes a practical half-day outing from the campground. Trailers can be left at the site to ease in-town parking.

I recently had the pleasure of staying in Lien's camper van for a music festival in Vermont, and I can't emphasize enough how perfectly it met my needs. My four essential requirements for the stay— a clean environment, a comfortable bed, a bathroom, and quality coffee—were not only satisfied but exceeded in every aspect, transforming my experience into one of sheer comfort and enjoyment. In fact, I enjoyed my stay so much that I’ve already booked for next year's festivities! Lien proved to be an exceptional host, embodying warmth and hospitality throughout my stay. She communicated effectively and was always available to address any questions I had, ensuring I felt welcome and well-informed. Her clear instructions prior to my arrival made the check-in process seamless, and she generously took the time to provide a thorough tutorial on the van's systems, which truly enhanced my experience. Furthermore, Lien went above and beyond by supplying plenty of pillows, blankets, and fresh spring water, which added thoughtful touches to my stay. Her attention to detail made all the difference, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the festival atmosphere without any worries. I wholeheartedly recommend her camper van as the perfect 'home away from home' for solo travelers or couples alike. If you're looking for a convenient, comfortable, and fun place to stay, look no further! You won't be disappointed!
