How to get to Yellowstone National Park

The nearest gateway towns are West Yellowstone, Montana (West Entrance), Gardiner, Montana (North Entrance), Cooke City, Montana (Northeast Entrance), Cody, Wyoming (East Entrance, about 52 miles to the entrance), and Jackson, Wyoming (South Entrance, about 57 miles via Grand Teton). Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport in Montana is the most common fly-and-rent airport, roughly 90 miles from the West Entrance. RV drivers should prepare for steep grades and switchbacks on Dunraven Pass, Sylvan Pass on the East Entrance road, and the climb over Craig Pass near Old Faithful, plus sustained high-elevation driving above 7,000 feet. Expect delays of up to 30 minutes due to road improvement projects, and check road alerts before departure since closures can occur without notice.

Best time to visit Yellowstone National Park

Late June through early September brings the warmest weather, the broadest access to interior roads, and full campground openings, making it the prime window for RV travel. July and August see the largest crowds at Old Faithful and Lamar Valley, so shoulder periods in late May, early June, and September offer thinner traffic and strong wildlife viewing. Because most of Yellowstone lies at 6,000 feet or higher, unpredictability characterizes the park's weather, with big temperature swings, rain, or snow possible during every month of the year. RVers should plan for cold overnight lows even in summer.
