Mid-June through August offers the warmest weather, full campground services, and prime conditions for swimming and beach use. Late spring and early fall bring fewer bugs, cooler nights, and strong walleye fishing, though overnight temperatures can drop near freezing in May and September. Winter is a distinct second season built around ice fishing on Lake of the Woods, but RV camping is limited as facilities close for the cold months. Black flies and mosquitoes peak in June, so travelers sensitive to bugs often prefer July or August.

Zippel Bay Beach is a long natural sand beach along Lake of the Woods, one of the largest freshwater beaches in the state park system. Parking is nearby with room for tow vehicles, and the shoreline is ideal for walking, swimming, and sunset views.
Lake of the Woods is one of North America's premier walleye fisheries, and the park's small craft harbor provides direct boat access to the big water. Shore anglers can also fish from the harbor breakwater for walleye, sauger, and northern pike.
Angler's Trail is a short wooded path connecting the campground area to the Lake of the Woods shoreline. It offers a quick leg stretch with views of bog, forest, and beach habitats.
The Ridge Trail loops through aspen and spruce forest on a low beach ridge left by ancient glacial Lake Agassiz. The mostly flat route is a good option for birding and spotting white-tailed deer.
The park protects a mosaic of sand dunes, peat bogs, and lakeshore that host piping plovers, bald eagles, warblers, and migrating shorebirds. Spring and fall migrations are especially productive for birders.
The park's protected harbor and boat launch give RVers towing a boat a rare sheltered access point to Lake of the Woods. Docks, a fish cleaning station, and a parking area for trucks and trailers are available.
In winter the park's trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with connections to snowmobile routes heading onto the frozen lake. RV access is limited in winter, so most visitors stay in nearby lodges or ice fishing resorts.

Zippel Bay State Park, MN, United States
The park lies about 10 miles north of Williams, Minnesota, roughly a 5 to 5.5 hour drive from Minneapolis via US-71 and MN-11. Bemidji sits about 2.5 hours south and is the closest regional hub for fuel, groceries, and RV supplies. International Falls is about 2 hours east and hosts the nearest regional airport for fly-and-rent travelers, while larger air service is available from Bemidji Regional Airport. Roads to the park are paved and generally flat with no tunnels or steep grades, but the final county road to the campground is gravel, so RVers should drive slowly and watch for washboard sections and soft shoulders in wet weather.
