Water-based recreation dominates the region. The Paint Lake Marina, the largest of its kind in Manitoba, is home to a restaurant and convenience store, and watersports equipment and cabins can be rented directly from the marina office. Paddlers explore the lake's many islands, and shoreline features include Spruce Grove, Beacon Hill, Coffee Cove, Pickerel Point, Dawn Beach, and Twilight Bay. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, and lake trout across the many lakes and river systems in the area. Popular activities in the park include hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, wildlife and bird viewing, and sports such as baseball and volleyball. Pisew Falls, one of Manitoba's tallest waterfalls, sits farther south on Highway 6 and makes a common day-trip stop for RV travellers moving through the region.

The practical camping window in this part of northern Manitoba is short. Paint Lake Campground operates seasonally, with services and interpretive programming running through the warmer months and the campground closed outside that window. In the winter months, the park also offers ice fishing, snowmobile trails, and a toboggan run, but standard RV camping is not viable. June through August is the peak season. Days are long, water temperatures are workable for swimming, and the fishing is active, but this is also when bookings fill fastest and when biting insects, especially blackflies in early summer and mosquitoes through midsummer, are at their worst. Bring repellent and screened shelter. Late spring and early fall offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and fewer bugs, but overnight temperatures can drop below freezing and some lakeside services wind down after Labour Day. The northern sections of Manitoba fall in the subarctic climate zone, featuring long and extremely cold winters and brief, warm summers with little precipitation.

Expect a remote, boreal-forest setting. Paint Lake Campground offers 86 campsites and six yurts as well as facilities and services for physically disabled visitors, with two playgrounds in the campground and on the beach, a volleyball court, modern washrooms, central shower buildings, and water taps. Amenities include a beach, boat launch, dumping station, electric sites, group camping, hiking trails, and unserviced sites. Leashed pets are welcome. Cell service is inconsistent once off the main highway corridor. Grocery selection north of Thompson is limited, so RV renters should stock up before heading further into the region toward Cross Lake 19. Wildlife is part of the experience: black bears, moose, and a wide range of birds are present. Store food in the RV, keep sites clean, and follow posted bear-safety guidance. Weather can shift quickly, and even summer nights are cool enough to warrant warm sleeping gear.
