Campgrounds near Kelsey, Manitoba
Kelsey is a rural municipality in northern Manitoba that wraps around the town of The Pas, placing RV travellers within easy reach of several provincial parks on the boreal Canadian Shield. The area is defined by clear northern lakes, mixed spruce and aspen forest, and the historic Grass River waterway, with fishing, paddling, and swimming as the main draws.
Clearwater Lake Provincial Park is home to two campgrounds, Campers Cove and Pioneer Bay, which sit on opposite sides of the lake and offer 79 campsites suitable for RV and tent camping. From The Pas, the park is reached by following PTH 10 north 19 km to PR 287, then east another 19 km.
Further north, Grass River Provincial Park contains developed campgrounds including Gyles - Grass River Provincial Park and Iskwasum - Grass River Provincial Park, both set along the Grass River Canoe Route. Closer to Flin Flon, Bakers Narrows Provincial Park sits on Lake Athapapuskow and serves as a base for anglers chasing lake trout, walleye, and northern pike.
Things to do near Kelsey
Water is the main attraction. Clearwater Lake is known for water so clear that visibility reaches roughly 11 metres down, and the park's trails include a network of deep crevice caves visitors can walk through and along. Long sandy beaches make it a straightforward stop for families with kids.
Anglers head to Grass River Provincial Park, where a chain of interconnected lakes supports walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Paddlers can pick up sections of the Grass River Canoe Route directly from the campground boat launches.
At Bakers Narrows Provincial Park, swimming beaches, a boat launch on Lake Athapapuskow, and a viewing tower above the campground give visitors a full day of options without leaving the park.

The camping window in this part of Manitoba is short and concentrated. Campers Cove and Pioneer Bay at Clearwater Lake operate from mid-May until Labour Day, and the Grass River campgrounds, including Gyles and Iskwasum, generally run from May through September. Bakers Narrows follows a similar May-to-September pattern.
July and August are the busiest weeks, with warm lake water, long daylight hours, and peak demand for electrical sites. Late May and early June can still see frost overnight, so travellers should be prepared for chilly evenings, particularly at the start of the season and when tent camping. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak in June, then taper through July.
Early September brings cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and the start of colour change in the boreal forest. Most park services wind down after Labour Day, and by October only day-use access and winter recreation remain, with snowmobiling and cross-country skiing taking over through the deep-freeze months.
How to book a campsite
All of the provincial park campgrounds around Kelsey are run by Manitoba Parks and booked through the same central system. Campsite and yurt reservations are made online at the Manitoba Parks reservation site or by phone through the provincial booking line. Reservations for both Clearwater Lake campgrounds open mid-April, with yurts at Campers Cove opening a bit earlier at the start of April.
Manitoba Parks releases inventory in staggered phases each spring, with cabins, yurts, and group-use areas opening first, followed by high-demand southern parks, then the northern and western parks that include Bakers Narrows and Clearwater Lake. A limited number of seasonal campsites in each campground are awarded via lottery, with a February cutoff to apply.
A Park Vehicle Permit is required and must be displayed year round. On arrival at Clearwater Lake, registration is handled at the Campers Cove campground office, which also serves Pioneer Bay.
What to expect on site
Sites are generally large and forested, with gravel pads and picnic tables. At Clearwater Lake, the campground offers 79 large, level campsites with modern washrooms and showers, and 70 of the sites are electrically serviced, with amenities including modern bathrooms, showers, laundry, picnic areas, playgrounds, and firepits. Bakers Narrows offers electrical sites, a dump station, showers, and restrooms, with a boat launch on Lake Athapapuskow.
Grass River campgrounds are more basic, with pit toilets, docks, and boat access rather than full-service infrastructure. Cell coverage is spotty once travellers leave PTH 10, so download maps and reservation confirmations before heading in. Bears and moose are present, so food should be stored in the RV and grey water handled at dump stations.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kelsey, MB
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kelsey, Manitoba?
An RV rental in Kelsey, Manitoba can be a remarkably affordable way to explore northern Manitoba. On RVezy, travel trailers in the region typically range from $100 to $175 CAD per night, while Class C motorhomes run roughly $200 to $300 CAD per night, with campervans somewhere in between. Booking outside peak summer (mid-June to late August) often saves 15 to 25 percent off nightly rates. To find a cheap RV rental in Kelsey, filter by price range, look for hosts offering multi-night discounts, and consider a Sunday-to-Thursday trip. Many area hosts list out of The Pas, so widening your search radius unlocks more value.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kelsey%2C%20ManitobaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Kelsey, MB?
Great news, a regular Class 5 Manitoba driver's license (or the equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Kelsey. No special RV endorsement or commercial license is required for any motorhome or trailer setup you'll find on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside Canada? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (under $25 from your local auto club) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval process is.
gov.mb.ca/mpi/dvl/index.htmlIs my Kelsey RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Kelsey, Manitoba includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 6 or PR 280 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. It provides substantial financial protection for collisions, certain interior damage, and roadside emergencies in remote northern Manitoba. If you are heading toward Thompson, Flin Flon, or the Nelson River area where cell service can be patchy, choose a higher-tier protection plan for extra confidence on those long stretches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Kelsey RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, including a full money-back grace period right after you book. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy (not by individual hosts), so you get consistent treatment no matter which listing you book in Kelsey. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so you can rebook. Lock in your dates with confidence and worry about packing later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Kelsey, Manitoba RV trip?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Kelsey is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings where dogs (and often cats) are welcome with hosts who understand that northern Manitoba road trips are better with a furry copilot. Once you arrive, Clearwater Lake Provincial Park near The Pas allows leashed pets on most trails and beaches, and Grass River Provincial Park has dog-friendly shoreline access. Pack a tie-out, extra water for hot July days, and a tick preventative since the boreal forest is prime tick territory. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and share your dog's size, it speeds approval and sets a friendly tone.
gov.mb.ca/nrnd/parks/index.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Kelsey or nearby?
Yes, RV delivery in Kelsey is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into The Pas Airport (YQD) and don't want to drive a large rig right away. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campground, cabin, or a private address in the area. They level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's location. Filter by Delivery on the search page, then message a few hosts with your exact drop-off spot to compare quotes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037830494-Delivery-optionsHow many kilometres can I drive on a Kelsey RV rental?
You have plenty of road to explore. Most RVezy hosts in the Kelsey area include 100 to 200 km per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for northern Manitoba where distances are long. Extra kilometres typically cost $0.30 to $0.45 CAD each. For perspective, Kelsey to Thompson is roughly 175 km, Kelsey to The Pas is about 120 km, and Kelsey to Winnipeg is around 700 km one way. If you are planning a true Kelsey RV trip with multiple stops, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts directly to discuss a higher daily allowance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037830314-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere can I camp with my RV near Kelsey, Manitoba?
You are spoiled for choice, with some of the best campgrounds near Kelsey within easy driving range. Clearwater Lake Provincial Park near The Pas is famous for its crystal-clear water and the Caves self-guiding trail. Grass River Provincial Park offers serviced and unserviced sites along a chain of pristine lakes. Paint Lake Provincial Park near Thompson has electrical sites and a sandy beach. Pisew Falls Wayside Park is a quick scenic stop on Highway 6. Reserve through the Manitoba Parks Reservation Service starting the first Monday in April, popular weekends fill quickly.
gov.mb.ca/nrnd/parks/reservations/index.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Kelsey?
The sweet spot is late June through early September, when northern Manitoba truly comes alive. Daytime highs in July and August average around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius, with long sub-arctic daylight that makes evenings around the campfire feel endless. June can still see cool overnight lows and lingering blackflies, while September brings cool nights and the first taste of fall colour along the Nelson River. Winter RV travel is possible with the right rig but very cold (-25 to -30 degrees Celsius is common in January). Aim for the last two weeks of August: the bugs are gone, lakes are still warm enough to swim, and campgrounds quiet down considerably.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlAre winter RV rentals available in Kelsey?
Yes, and it can be a genuine adventure. A handful of RVezy hosts in northern Manitoba list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and Arctic insulation packages built for serious cold. Winter rentals are most often used for ice fishing on Setting Lake, snowmobiling trails around The Pas, or chasing the aurora borealis, which is spectacular at this latitude from late August through April. Choose a site with 30 or 50 amp shore power so your furnace and tank heaters can run continuously. Pack expedition-grade sleeping bags as a backup. Message hosts early since winter-ready units are limited.
travelmanitoba.com/things-to-do/winter/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in northern Manitoba?
You will be in great shape, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, levelling, the propane system, holding tanks, and the generator, so you don't leave until you feel confident. Northern Manitoba routes like Highway 6 and PR 287 are wide, lightly trafficked, and forgiving for new RV drivers. Take corners slowly, watch for moose at dawn and dusk (especially north of Ponton), and plan fuel stops in advance since gas stations can be spaced 100 to 200 km apart. Your host is just a message away during the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown on the way to Kelsey?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, no matter where your Kelsey RV trip takes you. One phone call dispatches help for tire changes, battery boosts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service centre. In remote stretches like Highway 6 between Ponton and Thompson, response times can be longer simply because of distance, so carry a basic emergency kit, a satellite communicator if you have one, and a list of fuel stops. Your host is also reachable by phone or message for anything specific to their RV.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take a Kelsey RV rental across provincial or international borders?
Yes for most provincial borders, with one important rule for international travel. RVezy rentals are generally welcome throughout Canada and into the United States with host approval, so a road trip from Kelsey down through Saskatchewan or south to North Dakota is on the table. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Message the host before booking to confirm cross-border plans. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and proof of protection coverage for U.S. crossings. Popular routes from Kelsey include heading to Riding Mountain National Park or south toward the U.S. border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and fuel economy for a Kelsey RV road trip?
Plan smart and fuel is very manageable. Class C motorhomes in this region average about 18 to 22 litres per 100 km, campervans get 12 to 15 L/100km, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Manitoba gas prices typically run $1.40 to $1.70 CAD per litre, with northern communities like Thompson and The Pas slightly higher than Winnipeg. For an RV road trip from Kelsey to Clearwater Lake and back, budget roughly $100 to $175 CAD in fuel for a Class C. Top up whenever you see a station north of The Pas, the next pump can be 150 km away. GasBuddy works well in Manitoba's larger centres.
natural-resources.canada.ca/energy-sources/fossil-fuels/pricing/fuel-consumption-guideHow far in advance should I book a campground near Kelsey?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. Manitoba Parks opens its reservation system on the first Monday of April each year through the Manitoba Parks Reservation Service, and prime weekends at Clearwater Lake, Grass River, and Paint Lake often sell out within hours for July and August. Weeknights and shoulder-season dates (early June, post-Labour Day) are usually available even a few days out. Private campgrounds in The Pas take direct bookings by phone and tend to have more flexibility. If your dream weekend is sold out, set a reminder to check the reservation site about two weeks before your trip, cancellations open up regularly.
gov.mb.ca/nrnd/parks/reservations/index.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Kelsey, Manitoba?
They are generally easy, with a few northern realities to plan for. Highway 6 (the main north-south route) and PR 280 toward Kelsey are paved, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked, ideal for a relaxed RV pace. Watch for wildlife year-round: moose, black bear, and deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so slow down between sunset and sunrise. Gravel sections appear on some side roads, so check your host's policy on gravel travel. Spring (April-May) can bring soft shoulders and pothole season, while summer thunderstorms occasionally close stretches briefly. Manitoba 511 gives live road conditions and closures, bookmark it before you head north.
manitoba511.ca/en/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Kelsey?
Most provincial campgrounds in the region are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Clearwater Lake, Grass River, and Paint Lake all offer a mix of basic, electrical (15/30 amp), and fully serviced sites with picnic tables, fire pits, vault or flush toilets, and potable water taps. Dump stations are available at Clearwater Lake, Paint Lake, and most Manitoba Parks campgrounds, typically free with your camping permit. Showers are available at the larger parks for a small fee. Cell service can be spotty once you are off Highway 6, so download offline maps in advance. Top up fresh water before leaving The Pas, the next reliable potable fill is at Paint Lake.
gov.mb.ca/nrnd/parks/index.htmlWhat is included inside a typical RVezy rental in Manitoba?
You will be impressed by how turnkey most rentals are. The majority of RVs in northern Manitoba come with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people, a dining area, furnace, air conditioning, and propane hookups. Many include extras like an onboard generator, solar panels (handy for off-grid Crown land camping), backup camera, and Bluetooth stereo. Every seated travel position has a seatbelt. WiFi is rarely built in, but a mobile hotspot works near larger towns. Each listing shows a full amenity checklist plus photos, and hosts often include starter kits with linens, dishes, and camp chairs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kelsey%2C%20ManitobaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons for a motorhome rental in Kelsey include linens and bedding packages ($25-$50), kitchen kits ($25-$40), camp chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks, BBQs, and generator fuel. Many hosts offer optional dump and refill service on return ($50-$100) if you would rather skip the chore. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in The Pas or Thompson, and delivery is available from many listings if you would prefer the RV brought to a campground or airport. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees are all shown on the listing. Book add-ons during checkout, requesting them later sometimes means they are already reserved by another guest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kelsey%2C%20ManitobaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online. When you book a campervan rental in Kelsey or any RV in Manitoba, you pay through RVezy's secure checkout using a credit card, no cash or e-transfer to the host. A security deposit is held as a pre-authorization on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, not actually charged. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the right fuel level and tanks emptied per host instructions, the hold is released after your trip ends. Take date-stamped photos and a short walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, it is the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes.
