Campgrounds and RV parks near Cumberland House Cree Nation 20, SK

The Saskatchewan River Delta is the main draw: boating, canoeing, walleye and northern pike fishing, and some of the best waterfowl and songbird viewing on the prairies. Cumberland House Provincial Historic Park preserves the site of the Hudson's Bay Company post founded in 1774, including a stone powder magazine, and is a short drive from the community. Across the Manitoba border, campers can hike the Karst Spring Trail out of Grass River Provincial Park, climb the viewing tower at Bakers Narrows Provincial Park for a look over Lake Athapapuskow, or paddle sections of the historic Grass River canoe route. Clearwater Lake, reached from Campers Cove, is known for exceptional water clarity and lake trout fishing. Community events including fishing derbies and cultural gatherings run through the warmer months.

The practical RV season runs roughly mid-May to mid-September. Manitoba provincial parks around the region, including Bakers Narrows, Gyles in Grass River Provincial Park, and Campers Cove and Pioneer Bay in Clearwater Lake Provincial Park, operate seasonally from May through September, and opening dates can be pushed back by late snow, ice-out, or high water. July and August are peak months, with the warmest water, longest days, and the strongest fishing and paddling conditions. They also bring the heaviest bookings, the most biting insects, and the highest wildfire risk in the boreal forest, which can trigger campfire bans and short-notice park closures. Spring and early fall are quieter and cooler. September brings colour change and good fishing, but overnight temperatures drop toward freezing. Winter access to Cumberland House is possible but limited: developed campgrounds are closed, and recent rains have washed out Highway 123 leading to the village of Cumberland House and the neighbouring Cumberland House Cree Nation, prompting a state of emergency.

This is remote boreal country. Cumberland House itself is a small northern community reached by a single highway, and the surrounding campgrounds sit in Precambrian Shield and Manitoba Lowlands terrain of rock, spruce, pine, and lake. Cell coverage is patchy to nonexistent inside the parks, and there is no cell service on Highway 123. Most provincial park campgrounds in the region do not offer power, water, or sewer hookups at every site. Expect pit or flush toilets, showers at larger campgrounds, potable water taps at central points, fish-cleaning stations, boat launches, and dump stations. Bring drinking water, cash for firewood, and bug protection. Black bears, moose, and other wildlife live in the area, so store food inside the RV and follow bear-aware practices. Transporting firewood across provincial borders is discouraged; buy it locally at the campground.
