Activities track the geography. Pinery Provincial Park has sandy Lake Huron beaches, oak savannah, and an extensive paved bike path that suits families with kids on training wheels. Sandbanks Provincial Park anchors a beach-and-wine trip through Prince Edward County, with one of the largest bay-mouth barrier dune formations in the world. Further north, Algonquin Provincial Park is the canoeing and wildlife heart of the province: thousands of lakes, the Highway 60 corridor with visitor centres and short hikes, and reliable moose sightings in spring. Killbear Provincial Park combines wind-sculpted pines and pink granite shoreline on Georgian Bay with swimming and kayaking. Bon Echo Provincial Park is built around Mazinaw Rock, a 100-metre cliff covered in Indigenous pictographs, best seen from a tour boat or rental canoe. Rainy-day backups include small-town main streets, butter-tart bakeries, and waterfall hikes along the Niagara Escarpment and Bruce Trail.

The Ontario Parks operating season runs roughly Victoria Day weekend in late May through Canadian Thanksgiving in mid-October. July and August are peak: warm Great Lakes water, long evenings, and consistently booked campgrounds. Black flies are heaviest in late May and early June in the north, then taper off as mosquitoes take over through July. Shoulder seasons reward flexible travellers. Booking midweek or in shoulder seasons, like May or September, brings fewer crowds and better availability with all the benefits of summer camping. September into early October brings hardwood colour through Algonquin Provincial Park and the Haliburton Highlands, with the Highway 60 corridor at its busiest on fall weekends. Spring camping can be wet, and some park facilities, including comfort stations and trailer dump stations, open only after the May long weekend. Winter camping is available at a small number of parks with electrical sites and plowed roads, but most campgrounds close, water is shut off, and gate hours shorten. Most provincial park electrical sites offer 15- or 30-amp service. Full hookups with water and sewer are rare in the public system; for those, look to private parks and KOA properties. Dump stations and potable water fills are standard at the larger parks. Cell service is patchy in the interior of Algonquin Provincial Park and along the Georgian Bay coast near Killbear Provincial Park, so download maps before leaving the highway. Sites are typically wooded, with gravel pads and a fire ring. Bear-aware food storage is required throughout central and northern Ontario. The maximum length of stay for car camping at select parks is seven or fourteen nights between July 1 and the Saturday of the Labour Day long weekend. The maximum stay on a campsite at all other parks and during off-season is twenty-three consecutive nights. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. The registered camper must be of age of majority, and rules around minors in the party are posted at each gate.
