Kaneohe Bay itself is the main attraction. The bay holds the only barrier reef in the main Hawaiian Islands and a well-known offshore sandbar reachable by boat or kayak. Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden, in the foothills of the Ko‘olau, offers walking paths, lake views, and one of the few inland campgrounds on the island. Hikes on this side of Oahu range from the family-friendly Maunawili area to steeper ridge trails off the Pali. Snorkeling, surfing, and beach days are within a short drive at Kailua Beach, Lanikai, and the beaches lining Kamehameha Highway heading north. Camp Mokule‘ia, on the North Shore, gives tent campers and campervan renters direct beach access on the quieter western end of the shore, with reef snorkeling and open sky between Ka‘ena Point and Haleiwa.

Oahu has two broad seasons rather than four. The wet season runs roughly from October through April and delivers most of the year's rainfall, especially on the windward side where Kaneohe sits. Trade wind showers can be heavy but usually pass quickly. The dry season, May through September, brings warmer, drier, and more settled weather that most campers prefer. Summer is peak camping season, and demand on the limited legal sites is high. City and county campgrounds on Oahu close mid-week for maintenance, and Bellows Field Beach Park suspends overnight camping seasonally to protect nesting sea turtles. Confirm current closures before locking in dates. The Central Pacific hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with the highest activity from July through September. Direct hurricane hits on Oahu are uncommon, but tropical systems can bring heavy rain, high surf, and beach park closures with little notice, so keep a flexible plan during those months.

Most Oahu campgrounds are geared toward tents and small campervans rather than large motorhomes. Sites are typically grass or sand, hookups are rare, and vehicles are often required to park in a shared lot rather than beside the tent pad. Confirm vehicle length limits and parking rules with the operator before arrival, especially for a rented Class B or converted van. Amenities vary. County beach parks generally have restrooms, cold outdoor showers, and picnic tables. State parks add potable water at most sites. Camp Mokule‘ia provides showers, restrooms, picnic tables, fire pits, and platform tentalos in addition to standard tent sites. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a rain fly. Windward sites can be breezy at night, and passing showers are normal even in the dry season. Secure food, as feral chickens, cats, and mongoose are common visitors.
