The east side offers easy access to Wailua Falls, the Wailua River, and Lydgate Beach Park's protected lava-rock swimming ponds, which have lifeguards and are a strong pick for families. Ahukini State Recreational Pier, a short drive from Hanamaulu, is a popular fishing spot with views of the eastern shoreline. Further afield, day trips reach Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park in the uplands, the west-side beach at Polihale when accessible, and the north shore's Hanalei Bay and Ke'e Beach at the Kalalau Trail trailhead. Snorkeling, surfing, and short hikes are the main draws. Roads are narrow and slow on Kauai. Plan one region per day rather than trying to loop the island in a single trip.

Kauai has two loose seasons. The wetter months run roughly November through March, with the heaviest rain on the north shore and interior; Lihue and the south coast stay noticeably drier. Winter also brings large north-shore surf and the occasional Kona low that can close roads and campgrounds. Summer, from about May through September, is warmer, drier on the leeward side, and busier. Trade winds are steadier and swimming conditions on the north shore improve. This is peak booking season, and Hawaii state park permits release 90 days in advance and can fill quickly for popular sites such as the Napali Coast. Central Pacific hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity typically in August and September. Direct hits are rare, but tropical systems can bring heavy rain and prompt campground closures. Koke'e State Park camping is currently closed for campground improvements, with construction extending into 2027, and Polihale State Park camping is presently suspended, so travelers should confirm status before planning uplands or west-side stays.

Kauai campgrounds are basic. Most county beach parks provide picnic tables, restrooms, cold showers, and grills; hookups, dump stations, and dedicated RV pads are not a feature of the island's public campgrounds. Sites are generally grass or sand under ironwood trees, close to the beach. State park campgrounds do not allow sleeping in vehicles, campers, or trailers in their parking lots. RV renters typically use their vehicle for transport and gear storage and tent-camp at the site. Bring mosquito repellent, a rain fly, and a tarp; showers pass through year-round. Cell coverage is spotty outside towns, and grocery runs are best done in Lihue or Kapaa. Lock valuables, keep food secured, and never leave gear unattended at trailheads or beach parks.
