Campgrounds and RV parks near Wailua Homesteads, HI

Wailua Homesteads is an elevated residential area on the east side of Kauai, set above the Wailua River just west of Kapaa. The neighborhood sits in the green foothills below Mount Waialeale, with easy access to Kuamoo Road, the Sleeping Giant trailheads, and the Coconut Coast beaches a short drive downhill. There is no drive-in RV park inside Wailua Homesteads itself. Kauai does not permit overnight sleeping in vehicles on public land, and state park campgrounds on the island are not set up to accommodate campers, vans, or trailers. RV renters typically base at private campgrounds or park their rig at a permitted site and use tent camping at nearby county and state parks. Nearby options on Kauai are split between the Hawaii Division of State Parks system, four Kauai County beach parks, and a small number of private and church-run camps. Travelers pairing Kauai with an Oahu stop sometimes add Camp Mokule‘ia, a beachfront tent and cabin camp on Oahu's North Shore, to their itinerary.

State park camping on Kauai is handled by the Hawaii Division of State Parks through the Explore Outdoor Hawaii reservation system. Permits are released up to 30 days ahead for most Kauai state parks, and the maximum stay at any one park is five consecutive nights, with a waiting period before returning to the same park. Napali Coast, Kokee, and Polihale all use this same system, and Polihale camping has been suspended at times, so check status before planning. County of Kauai beach parks, including Lydgate, Anini, Anahola, and Salt Pond, are reserved through the county's online camping portal. Each park closes one day a week for maintenance, and stays are capped at several consecutive nights depending on the park. Private and church-run camps such as Camp Mokule‘ia on Oahu take reservations directly through their own websites and often book out further ahead for weekends and holidays.
