Campgrounds and RV parks near Hoxie, KS

Sheridan State Fishing Lake, about twelve miles east of Hoxie just north of US-24, is the closest outdoor draw. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks drained the lake in early 2024 for a multi-year renovation, with reopening anticipated in summer 2027; the property stays open for camping and picnicking, but fishing and boating are not available during the work. About an hour northeast, Prairie Dog State Park at Keith Sebelius Reservoir offers a 2,181-acre lake with walleye, saugeye, wipers, largemouth bass, crappie, and channel catfish, plus a 1.4-mile nature trail, a prairie dog colony, and the restored 1890s adobe house. Norton, Oberlin, and Colby add small museums, public pools, and farm-town main streets. Pheasant and waterfowl hunting in fall pulls many of the area's seasonal RV visitors.

Northwest Kansas has a short, intense camping season shaped by High Plains weather. Late spring through early fall is the most reliable window for RV travel, with the warmest, longest days falling in June and July. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year and the highest severe-weather risk: thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes are most common from late April through June, and travelers should monitor NOAA forecasts and have a shelter plan. Summer is hot and mostly clear, with daytime highs frequently in the 90s Fahrenheit and cool nights that make tent and RV camping comfortable after sundown. Fall is the local favorite: mild days, cool nights, low precipitation, and the start of pheasant season in November, which fills small-town RV parks quickly. Winters are cold and windy with periodic snow, and several private parks shut down or run on limited services from late autumn through early spring. Prairie Dog State Park's primary reservable camping season runs April 1 through October 31, with cabins available year-round.

Expect small, no-frills RV parks rather than destination resorts. Sites in the area are typically gravel or grass pull-throughs and back-ins with 30 and 50 amp service, water, and a dump station; full hookups are common but not universal. Cell coverage along US-24 and I-70 is generally solid, weaker at Sheridan State Fishing Lake. Shade is limited across the High Plains, so awnings and window covers help in summer. Wind is a constant factor on the High Plains, especially during spring fronts, and exposed lakeshore sites offer little shelter. Pack leveling blocks for uneven prairie pads, and plan fuel stops carefully since service stations thin out between towns. Most parks are pet friendly but ask that dogs be leashed.
