Fishing anchors most trips. The most popular species sought by anglers at Sherman Reservoir are walleye, crappie, catfish, white bass, and northern pike, with pike action starting in March in the shallow coves and walleye activity peaking near the dam during the April spawn. The seven-acre lake at North Loup State Recreation Area offers bluegill, common carp, channel catfish, crappie and largemouth bass, among other species. Boating is straightforward on the larger reservoirs. All types of boats are permitted at Sherman Reservoir, which offers three ramps and three boat docks, while smaller waters like Cheyenne SRA and North Loup are limited to electric motors and non-powered boats. Off the water, families can visit the Grand Island area for the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, the Crane Trust near Wood River, and small-town main streets in St. Paul, Loup City, and Ravenna.

Central Nebraska has a strong four-season climate. Grand Island experiences a humid continental climate marked by a very strong seasonal temperature contrast; summers are hot and bring the most precipitation, while winters are cold with regular snowfall, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year with winter moisture often arriving as snow. Peak camping runs from late May through early September, with shoulder weekends in April, early May, and October offering cooler nights and fewer crowds. Reservoir fishing sets the seasonal calendar. Northern pike action starts in the shallows in March, walleye peak around the April spawn near Sherman Dam, crappie catches are excellent in May as flooded habitat opens in the coves, and channel catfish provide steady summer angling. Late spring brings the heaviest rainfall of the year, so campers should expect muddy access roads at primitive areas and watch for severe thunderstorm warnings. Winter camping is possible but bare-bones. Nebraska state park water systems are typically shut down after the peak season and many electrical loops move to reduced service, so RVers traveling from November through March should confirm which loops remain open and plan for freezing overnight temperatures.

Expect a wide range of amenity levels. North Loup State Recreation Area offers several primitive camping sites without electricity, and there is no potable water or restroom facilities at North Loup SRA, so RVs need to arrive fully self-contained. Sherman Reservoir's West Ridge loop, by contrast, offers 30/50-amp electric sites, modern restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a dump station. Cheyenne SRA is now more RV-ready than in past years. The campground features 21 electrical campsites with 50-amp service, including two ADA-compliant sites, plus two nonelectric tent sites, and campers will find modern amenities including a restroom, fresh water-fill hydrant, vault toilet and boat ramp. Grand Island KOA Journey provides full hookups along I-80, while Buffalo County Recreation Area at Ravenna Lake offers a mix of primitive and electric sites with a bathhouse. Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-80 and thinner in the Loup River bottoms. Trains pass near several county parks, and mosquitoes can be heavy after wet spells, so bring screens and repellent.
