Shoulder months of May and September offer cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier site selection. Spring brings the wettest weather of the year. The wettest time of year in Lincoln is normally late spring, with May averaging around 4.91 inches of precipitation versus 0.73 inches in January. Storms can be intense, so RV travelers should watch severe-weather alerts from late April through June. Summer heat and humidity peak in July and August. Expect open prairie and reservoir shoreline rather than dense forest. Sites at the larger parks are generally spread out, with picnic tables, fire rings, and shared vault or primitive restrooms. Wagon Train State Recreation Area offers 28 camping pads with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electrical hookups and 80 non-pad sites without electricity, along with water, primitive restrooms, and a dump station. Bluestem State Recreation Area has 39 Electric Plus campsites, including three accessible sites, plus additional Basic sites, a shower house, drinking water, primitive restrooms, and a dump and fill station. Olive Creek State Recreation Area is more primitive, without electric hookups. Cell service from major carriers is generally usable across the Salt Valley lakes. Bring water on arrival; on-site spigots exist but are seasonal and are typically shut off from late fall through mid-April.
