Camping near Gladwin, Michigan
Gladwin sits in central Michigan's Lower Peninsula along the Cedar River, roughly halfway between Saginaw Bay and the Au Sable River corridor. The area draws RV travellers for its concentration of small lakes, warm-water rivers, and public land tied to the Gladwin Field Trial Area and surrounding Au Sable State Forest tracts. Most private and municipal campgrounds cluster within a short drive of the city, while state forest sites lie 15 to 20 minutes north along M-18.
Gladwin City Park & Campground anchors the in-town option, with riverside sites, water and electric hookups, full-hookup sites, and cabins on the Cedar River. Nearby, Northern Sites Campground, Calhoun Campground, River Valley RV Park, and Taylors Lost Haven Campground offer additional private options across Gladwin County, ranging from full-hookup RV parks to rustic tent-friendly settings.
The surrounding forest is flat to gently rolling, with sandy soils, mixed hardwood and pine cover, and elevations near 780 feet. Small lakes, warm-water streams, and ORV trails are the main draws for renters planning a base-camp weekend.
Things to do around Gladwin
Water activities lead the list. The Cedar River runs shallow through Gladwin City Park & Campground, with a sandy swimming beach, a riverside walking path, and local rentals for canoes, kayaks, and tubes. The Tobacco, Tittabawassee, and Cedar rivers all support paddling and warm-water fishing within a short drive, and area lakes hold bass, panfish, and stocked trout.
On land, the Gladwin Field Trial Area and adjacent state forest provide access to hunting, hiking, and ORV routes. Families often pair a stay at Gladwin City Park & Campground with day trips to Wilson State Park on Budd Lake in Harrison and the Whiting Forest canopy walk at Dow Gardens in Midland, about 30 minutes south. Ballfields, tennis and basketball courts, a volleyball court, and a playground sit inside Gladwin's city park itself.

Peak camping season runs from mid-May through September, when daytime highs sit in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and overnight lows stay mild. Spring is shoulder season. Ice-out on inland lakes typically arrives in April, morel hunting picks up in May, and the statewide trout opener on the last Saturday of April brings anglers to area streams. Expect cool nights, muddy two-tracks in the state forest, and biting insects late in the month.
Fall brings hardwood colour from late September into mid-October, cooler nights, and the November 15 firearm deer opener, which fills rustic and hunt-access sites. Winter camping is possible at year-round rustic state forest sites, but seasonal forest roads are not plowed and most private RV parks close or run limited services from November into April.

How to book campgrounds near Gladwin
Gladwin City Park & Campground takes reservations online through the city's booking portal and by phone, with rustic, water and electric, water-electric-sewer, and cabin options. Its operating season runs May 1 through October 31, and cabin stays are limited to a maximum of 14 consecutive nights. Private parks including Northern Sites Campground, Calhoun Campground, River Valley RV Park, and Taylors Lost Haven Campground each handle reservations directly, so contact them for site type, rig-length limits, and pet rules before arrival.
For state forest campgrounds in the surrounding Au Sable State Forest, sites are managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Most rustic state forest sites are first-come, first-served, while reservable DNR sites open up to six months in advance at midnrreservations.com. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to state forest campgrounds, state parks, and DNR boat launches.
What to expect on arrival
In-town and private parks near Gladwin generally offer water and electric hookups, dump stations, showers, and bathhouses, though 50-amp full-hookup sites are limited and should be requested at booking. Cell service is reliable in and near Gladwin and weakens on the two-track roads north toward the state forest.
State forest campgrounds around Gladwin are rustic. Expect vault toilets, hand-pump wells for potable water, and no electric hookups. Sites can accommodate mid-size RVs, but interior roads are gravel or sand and turnarounds are tight for longer rigs. Bring a full fresh-water tank, extra levelling blocks, and bug protection from May through July.
Black bears are present but uncommon at developed campgrounds. Store food securely, follow posted fire restrictions, and check for burn bans during dry stretches in mid to late summer.

It's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV, traveling with kids, or flying into MBS International Airport about an hour south.

Winters here are genuinely cold with regular snow, but ice-fishing fans rent winterized rigs to camp near Wixom and Secord lakes. Filter for four-season RVs if that's your plan.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in Gladwin?
Yes, Gladwin is one of the friendliest places in Michigan to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, tanks, propane, and the awning so you're not guessing. If you'd rather not drive at all, choose the Delivery option and have the RV set up at your campsite before you arrive. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around quiet streets in Gladwin before pointing the rig toward Sugar Springs or Beaverton.

Cross-state travel is welcomed by most Gladwin hosts: you can take your rental into Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, or anywhere across the Lower 48 with a quick heads-up to your host. The Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula is about 3.5 hours north and totally fine for RVs. Crossing into Canada (Sault Ste. Marie is about 4.5 hours north, or Sarnia/Port Huron under 2.5 hours south) may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan you select, so confirm in writing before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there.

Regular gas in Gladwin County tends to track close to the Michigan state average, with convenient stations along M-61 in town and at the US-10/M-30 junction in Sanford. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gladwin?
For Michigan state parks and state forest campgrounds (Wilson State Park, North Higgins Lake, and others), book through the Michigan DNR reservation system as early as possible for summer weekends, especially around July 4th and Labor Day. Reservations on the DNR system open up to 6 months in advance. Private parks like River Valley RV Park and Sugar Springs Campground can often be booked a couple of months out, and Gladwin City Park & Campground takes reservations through the city. midnrreservations.com/What are the driving conditions like around Gladwin?
Driving around Gladwin is refreshingly easy. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, the main routes (M-61, M-18, M-30, US-10) are well-maintained two- and four-lane highways, and traffic is light outside of summer Friday afternoons. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially on rural stretches between Gladwin and Beaverton, and slow down in spring frost-heave season when some county roads get bumpy until repairs catch up. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so if you're winter camping near Secord or Wixom lakes, plan around plowing schedules. Otherwise, you're looking at some of the most relaxed RV driving in Michigan.

Many include a generator or solar setup for off-grid camping in nearby state forest campgrounds. Wi-Fi varies: some hosts include a mobile hotspot, while Verizon and AT&T LTE both perform well in downtown Gladwin and around Secord and Wixom lakes. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gladwin%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host, so everything is tracked and protected. A refundable security deposit is placed on hold before pickup (the amount depends on the RV and the listing) and is released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any issues, do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and again at drop-off, follow the mileage and generator-hour rules in your listing, and return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels you received.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Gladwin by RV?
An RV road trip from Gladwin opens up the heart of Pure Michigan. Top picks: Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 3 hours northwest) for wine country and towering sand dunes; Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (about 3.5 hours north) for fudge, ferries, and Lake Huron sunsets; Houghton Lake (about an hour north) for Michigan's largest inland lake; Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula (about 5.5 hours) for waterfalls and forest hikes; and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (around 6 hours) for jaw-dropping Lake Superior cliffs.
