Camping near Milford, Michigan
Milford sits in western Oakland County, roughly 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, and is surrounded by a dense cluster of state recreation areas along the Huron River corridor. Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres, is located on the scenic Huron River and borders Proud Lake, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites, fishing and paddling opportunities and an extensive trail system open to hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Within a short drive, RV travelers can also reach Highland Recreation Area, a 5,900-acre park in Oakland County, and Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, which sits within the 3,745-acre Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County and supports year-round day-use recreation.
For a more resort-style stay, Camp Dearborn, established in 1948, is a 626-acre recreational retreat in Milford, offering a wide range of overnight camping options, including rustic cabins and resort cabins, as well as sites for camper-provided tents or trailers. Camp Dearborn's exceptional amenities include a half-mile of sandy beach, athletic fields and tennis courts, shaded picnic areas, swimming and fishing lakes, concession stand and a 27-hole championship golf course. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in nearby New Hudson rounds out the mix with full-hookup RV sites.
Things to do around Milford
Trails dominate the area. Proud Lake offers various outdoor activities including 20 miles of hiking trails (9 miles of which are open to horses and mountain bikes), cross-country skiing, fishing in the Huron River, hunting in limited areas, canoeing, and picnicking. Highland Recreation Area boasts an impressive 44 miles of trails, open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers. History buffs will appreciate the remnants of the Ford family estate, once a private retreat for the renowned industrialist Edsel Ford.
Water is the other draw. The park's section of the Huron River is managed as a Type I trout stream at Proud Lake, and Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile long. Families traveling with kids often base at Camp Dearborn for its beach, mini golf, paddle boats and pool.

Summer is the peak window. Camp Dearborn's season runs May 1 through November 1, with peak season from June 14 through August 15, packed with extra programs and events for all ages. State recreation area sites at Proud Lake and Highland fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays, and campgrounds at Michigan state parks and recreation areas accept reservations up to six months in advance, so booking early for summer weekends is advisable.
Shoulder seasons offer easier reservations. Proud Lake draws paddlers and cross-country skiers when snow is sufficient, and fly anglers arrive in the spring for a catch-and-release trout season. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds and hardwood color across Haven Hill and the Huron River valley.
One key seasonal note for planning: the modern campground and A-frame cabin at Pontiac Lake are closed for the remainder of the 2026 season. While construction on the new sanitation station and solar project is making progress, unforeseen delays mean the campground will not reopen until next season. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open; however, the sanitation station is not available to campers. Confirm status before booking.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!
