Campgrounds near Glen Alpine
Glen Alpine sits in Burke County, North Carolina, at the base of the Blue Ridge foothills roughly 15 minutes from Lake James State Park and within a short drive of the Linville Gorge Wilderness. Glen Alpine is a small community outside Morganton, surrounded by nature with the Linville Gorge Wilderness nearby for hiking and outdoor activities. The location works well as an RV base for lake recreation, mountain hiking, and Blue Ridge Parkway day trips.
RV travelers have a mix of private parks and public options within a short drive. Riverside Golf and RV Park and Rose Creek Family Campground sit closest to town, while Steele Creek Park, Steel Creek Park Campground, and Spacious Skies Hidden Creek offer additional full-hookup and family-oriented sites in the surrounding foothills.
Lake James is a 6,812-acre reservoir with more than 150 miles of shoreline, and the state park serves as the centerpiece for regional outdoor recreation. Lake James State Park sits in Burke and McDowell counties about 50 miles northeast of Asheville, with two access areas for boating, swimming, and fishing.
Things to do near Glen Alpine
Water recreation drives most trips. Paddy's Creek Area is the only part of Lake James where swimming is permitted, and canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals are available at the concession stand from May through September. Boaters can launch from public ramps on NC 126, and largemouth bass fishing is strong from spring into fall.
Hiking options range from easy to strenuous. Table Rock offers challenging trails and views, Shortoff Mountain has dramatic cliffs, and Linville Falls features cascading waterfalls. Trails at Lake James include bike paths at Paddy's Creek, the kid-friendly Holly Discovery Trail, the historic Overmountain Victory Trail, and the Fonta Flora State Trail.
Off the trail, downtown Morganton sits minutes away for restaurants, breweries, and local dining.

The Glen Alpine area is a year-round destination, but activity levels shift sharply by season. Lake James State Park is open year-round except Christmas Day, and summer is the busiest time for outdoor activities on the lake. The swim beach at Paddy's Creek is open from May through September, and April through October is the strongest window for largemouth bass fishing.
Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and higher flows on waterfalls, though it is also one of the wetter stretches of the year. Summer runs hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; weekends and holidays draw crowds at the lake and along popular trails. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower rainfall, and peak leaf color from mid-October through early November.
Winter is quiet. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close, and higher-elevation trails in Pisgah National Forest can see ice and snow. Storm damage from recent hurricane activity has closed some trails and roads in the region, so check current status before planning routes.
How to book campgrounds near Glen Alpine
Public sites at Lake James State Park are booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for the same day and up to six months in advance. Two-night minimum stays apply to Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Reservations are required for the paddle-in sites on Long Arm Peninsula and must be made prior to arrival.
Linville Gorge Wilderness overnight permits are handled through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Permits are required to camp within the Wilderness boundary on Friday and Saturday nights from May through October, and also on Sunday nights of three-day holiday weekends. Fifty people per night are permitted, with 70 percent of the quota released one month ahead and 30 percent released three days ahead.
Private parks like Riverside Golf and RV Park, Rose Creek Family Campground, and Spacious Skies Hidden Creek accept direct bookings through their own websites; summer weekends fill early.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks near Glen Alpine typically offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, bathhouses, and Wi-Fi at most sites. State park camping is more rustic. The Catawba River walk-in sites are located along or near the shoreline with potable water and a bathhouse with hot showers near the parking area. Paddle-in sites on Long Arm Peninsula have no running water and only toilet facilities on site.
Roads to state park access areas are paved and easy to navigate with larger rigs, but forest service roads leading into Linville Gorge trailheads can be rough gravel. Cell coverage is spotty in the gorge and along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
This is black bear country. Store food in hard-sided vehicles or bear boxes, keep sites clean, and follow posted food-storage rules at all Pisgah and state park sites.

ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/fees-permits-policiesDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Glen Alpine?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Glen Alpine for the vast majority of rigs on the platform. North Carolina only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer listed on RVezy falls well under that. You also need to be an approved driver on RVezy (generally 25 or older) with a valid license. No commercial driver license (CDL) and no RV endorsement required, just pack your bag and pick up the keys.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside coverage comes with my Glen Alpine RV rental?
Every RV rental in Glen Alpine booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on I-40 toward Asheville or wind up NC 181 to the Blue Ridge Parkway with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and each plan covers physical damage to the RV up to set limits. Roadside assistance covers flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing, one call gets help dispatched any time of day. First time renting an RV? This built-in safety net is one of the biggest reasons guests feel confident booking.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change, can I cancel my Glen Alpine RV rental?
Yes. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, so terms are consistent across every Glen Alpine listing. You get a short money-back grace period right after booking, and refunds beyond that depend on how close your trip is to the start date. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds you or helps you rebook. Full details appear during checkout and in your booking confirmation. Pro tip for your Glen Alpine RV trip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Lake James weekends, knowing the policy is transparent and the same on every listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Glen Alpine?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Glen Alpine options are easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Lake James State Park allows leashed pets at campsites and on every trail, though not on the swim beach or inside buildings, so your pup can hike Paddy's Creek and the Fonta Flora State Trail right alongside you. Catawba Meadows Park in nearby Morganton is another great off-leash-friendly stop. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed notes, then pack a tie-out, a towel for muddy paws, and you're set.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/rules-safetyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Glen Alpine?
Yes, RV delivery Glen Alpine is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never driven a motorhome before. Many hosts will tow the rig directly to Lake James State Park's Paddy's Creek Area, Lake James Camping Resort & Marina, or River Pointe RV Park on Watermill Glen Alpine Road, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your campsite number and dates, and they'll quote a fee based on distance (typically a flat rate plus per mile beyond a set radius). You show up, unpack, and start your trip.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingHow far can I travel from Glen Alpine on a typical RV rental?

Most Glen Alpine hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with the option to upgrade to RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Glen Alpine you can reach Asheville in about 55 miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway at Linville Falls in roughly 30 miles, Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 110 miles, Charlotte in 75 miles, and Boone in 50 miles. Planning a longer RV road trip from Glen Alpine? Message the host before booking to negotiate an unlimited-miles add-on, it's usually cheaper than racking up overage fees.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhere should I camp near Glen Alpine?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Glen Alpine start with Lake James State Park (Paddy's Creek Area has 33 drive-in sites with hot showers and a 24/7 bathhouse, plus a 700-foot swim beach, just 10 miles west on NC 126). Lake James Camping Resort & Marina, four miles off I-40 exit 94, offers full-hookup lakefront sites with an on-site marina. River Pointe RV Park on Watermill Glen Alpine Road is a quiet country park close to Pisgah National Forest and Fonta Flora Brewery. For a Blue Ridge view, head 45 minutes north to Spacious Skies Bear Den. Reservations open six months ahead at NC State Parks, so book Lake James as early as possible for summer weekends.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingWhen is the best time for an RV trip in Glen Alpine?
Glen Alpine has a long, friendly RV season thanks to its foothills climate. Spring (April to early June) brings 60s to mid-70s and wildflowers along the Linville Gorge rim. Summer highs sit around 85 to 88°F with humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms (Lake James is the cool-down hero with its 6,812-acre swimming lake). Fall (mid-September through October) is the local sweet spot, mild days in the 60s and 70s, leaf-peeping season on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and far fewer crowds. Winters dip to the 30s with occasional snow, so if you want a quiet, off-season RV camping Glen Alpine experience, target October or early November.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Glen Alpine?
You'll do great, Glen Alpine is one of the easier first-time renting an RV destinations in North Carolina. Roads here are wide, traffic is light, and I-40 runs straight through with simple exits at Nebo (exit 90) and Dysartsville (exit 94) for Lake James. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, water systems, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip. For your first day, plan a short hop, maybe 20 minutes to Paddy's Creek campground, so you can practice parking before tackling NC 181 up toward the Blue Ridge Parkway. Choose a Class B campervan or 24-foot Class C if you want the easiest drive.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I break down during my Glen Alpine RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Glen Alpine includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. One phone call dispatches help whether you are parked at the Catawba River Access, climbing NC 181 toward Linville Falls, or cruising I-40 toward Asheville. Your host is also a quick text away for questions specific to their rig (how to reset the inverter, where the spare fuses live), and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Glen Alpine?
Glen Alpine sits at the doorstep of some of the South's best RV routes. The Blue Ridge Parkway is 30 minutes north at Linville Falls, where you can string together Grandfather Mountain, Linville Caverns, and Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi at 6,684 feet) over a long weekend. Head 55 miles west on I-40 to Asheville for breweries and the Biltmore Estate. Push 110 miles southwest to Great Smoky Mountains National Park for a week-long loop. Want beach time? It's about 250 miles east to Wrightsville Beach. Cross-border travel into Tennessee or South Carolina is allowed on most rentals (just confirm with your host); Mexico is not permitted, as insurance coverage doesn't extend there.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Glen Alpine RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate here. North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and Burke County has plenty of stations along I-40 and US 70 (Sheetz, Speedway, and Murphy USA in nearby Morganton are popular RV-friendly stops). Plan on 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, 12 to 18 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal economy minus 20 to 30 percent for travel trailers. For a typical 3-night Glen Alpine to Asheville loop (~150 miles round trip), budget $60 to $90 in fuel. Fill up in Morganton before heading up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Glen Alpine?
For Lake James State Park, book the moment the window opens, six months ahead is the maximum, and summer weekends plus October leaf-season nights sell out fast. Reservations go through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, with a minimum two-night stay on holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Private parks like Lake James Camping Resort & Marina and River Pointe RV Park typically take reservations 3 to 6 months out and tend to have more last-minute openings. Pro tip: if your dates are tight, check the Catawba River Access walk-in sites at Lake James, they're often available even when Paddy's Creek is full.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/lake-james-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NC&parkId=552855What are driving conditions like around Glen Alpine?
Driving around Glen Alpine is mostly relaxed, with a few mountain spots that reward a slow hand. I-40 is wide and straightforward through Burke County, and NC 126 to Lake James is gently rolling. The fun gets real when you climb NC 181 or NC 183 up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, expect tight curves, 7 percent grades, and occasional fog above 3,000 feet, so use lower gears on descents and watch your engine temperature. Summer afternoons often bring quick thunderstorms (just pull over and wait 20 minutes). In winter, black ice is possible on Parkway access roads, so check NCDOT's DriveNC.gov before heading up. Otherwise, this is genuinely friendly RV country.
drivenc.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Glen Alpine?
Campground amenities near Glen Alpine range from full-service to refreshingly rustic. Private parks like Lake James Camping Resort & Marina and River Pointe RV Park offer full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and dump stations on-site. Lake James State Park's Paddy's Creek Area has potable water faucets throughout, a 24/7 bathhouse with hot showers, fire pits, and picnic tables, but no electric or sewer hookups at sites (it's drive-in tent-style camping). For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, the state park has a public dump station, and most private parks let paying guests dump for free. Bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp adapter just in case.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Glen Alpine?
Most RVs available for rent in Glen Alpine come fully equipped for a comfortable trip out of the box. Expect a queen or king bed, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (air conditioning plus furnace), and seatbelted travel seats for everyone in your group. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 6, Class A's sleep 6 to 8, and travel trailers run the full range. Many listings also include a generator, TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and sometimes Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi (handy since cell service drops in Linville Gorge). Check each listing's amenities list and message the host if you need something specific like a bike rack or kid-friendly setup.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/things-doWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with Glen Alpine RV rentals?
Hosts in the Glen Alpine area get creative with add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include camping chairs and tables, propane refills, generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks (a must for Lake James), grills, and outdoor rugs, each priced individually on the listing. Pickup is usually from the host's driveway in Glen Alpine, Morganton, or Nebo, but many hosts offer delivery to Lake James State Park or your campground of choice for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage policies vary by host (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day with overage at $0.30 to $0.50/mile, or an unlimited-mileage upgrade). Confirm all add-ons in writing through the RVezy message thread before pickup.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-park/activitiesHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Glen Alpine RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit card at the time of booking, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit (set by the host, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is held separately on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape with the tanks dumped and fuel topped off. To avoid any deposit issues on your rent an RV in Glen Alpine experience, take time-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's mileage and dumping instructions, and message any small issues through the RVezy app right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Glen Alpine in winter?
Yes, winter RV camping in Glen Alpine is absolutely doable and quietly magical. Lake James State Park stays open year-round (closed only Christmas Day), and you'll often have Paddy's Creek nearly to yourself in January and February. Daytime highs sit in the 40s and 50s with overnight lows in the 20s to 30s, so look for a motorhome rental Glen Alpine listing with a working furnace, heated holding tanks, and shore-power capability, then ask the host how to keep the freshwater hose from freezing (most owners include a heated hose or insulating foam). Bonus: winter is prime time to spot bald eagles nesting at Lake James and to drive a quiet Blue Ridge Parkway between snow events.
