Campgrounds and RV parks near Beresford, SD

Newton Hills State Park has multi-use trails including the Woodland, Blue Diamond and Deer Run routes, plus swimming, fishing and boating access on Lake Lakota and the Big Sioux River. More than 200 bird species pass through the park each year, along with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and red and gray fox. The Deer Run and Blue Diamond trails form a six-mile loop open to horseback riding. Union Grove State Park offers 4.3 miles of multi-use trail for horseback riders, mountain bikers and skiers, plus the 1.2-mile Brule Bottom hiking trail. A lookout point marks one of the highest elevations in southeastern South Dakota, with views reaching the DakotaDome in Vermillion on a clear day. Beresford itself has a municipal pool, small restaurants and grocery stops within a short drive of Windmill RV Park Campground, useful for families breaking up long interstate travel days.

The peak camping window runs from late May through mid-September, when daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit and both state parks and private RV parks are fully operational. July is the warmest month, with weekend sites at Newton Hills and Union Grove filling quickly. June carries the highest rainfall of the year and the most active severe-weather pattern, including thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches. Spring arrives slowly. March and April are variable, with snow still possible and state park water systems often still off. May typically brings reliable warmth and green trails, and it is a strong month for birding along Brule Creek and the Big Sioux River. Fall is a good shoulder season for RV travel. September and October bring cool nights, low humidity and color in the oak and cottonwood stands at Newton Hills. Between October 1 and April 30, bow hunting is permitted inside Newton Hills State Park, and showers, flush toilets and other water systems at both state parks may be closed during that same window.

Union Grove State Park has 25 sites, including four horse campsites, arranged in a compact loop on a wooded hilltop. Sites offer 30 and 50 amp electric but no individual water or sewer; a dump station and central water are on site, along with a well-kept shower building and a playground. Some highway noise from I-29 carries into the campground. Newton Hills State Park is much larger, with 126 standard campsites, 10 horse sites, 11 camping cabins, a modern cabin and two group lodges. Most sites have electric hookups, and larger rigs are accommodated on longer pads, with some sites able to fit rigs up to 75 feet. Windmill RV Park Campground in Beresford has full-hookup sites on flat ground with pull-through options, a bathhouse, laundry and dump station. It is oriented toward overnight interstate travelers and longer monthly stays rather than resort-style amenities.
