Cana camping overview
Cana sits in Carroll County in southwestern Virginia, just north of the North Carolina line and a few miles east of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Fancy Gap. The area works well as an RV base for Parkway drives, Mount Airy day trips, and access to trails along the Blue Ridge escarpment. Elevations climb quickly from the Piedmont foothills to roughly 2,900 feet at Fancy Gap, which keeps summer nights cooler than nearby lowland towns.
Private RV parks cluster along the U.S. 52 and I-77 corridor near Exit 8. The Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey operates seasonally from mid-March through late November and hosts a mix of tent, RV, and cabin guests. Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, Utt's Campground, Beechnut Family Campground, and Mayberry Campground round out the closest options, most within a short drive of Parkway access points.
Parkway-run campgrounds and North Carolina state parks lie within an hour, giving renters a mix of full-hookup private sites and rustic public alternatives.
Things to do near Cana
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the main draw. Mabry Mill, Groundhog Mountain, and the Rocky Knob overlooks all sit within an easy drive north on the Parkway, and Mount Airy, North Carolina, the inspiration for Mayberry, is a short trip south. Cyclists can also access the New River State Trail, a rail-trail that runs through nearby Grayson and Carroll counties.
Hikers can tackle sections of the Rock Castle Gorge Trail in the Rocky Knob Recreation Area, which spans mile markers 167 to 174 along the Parkway and includes miles of hiking trails plus tent and RV sites.
Families often add Pilot Mountain State Park to the itinerary. The park sits about 30 miles south in North Carolina and is known for its distinctive quartzite pinnacle, with rock climbing, hiking, and picnicking on offer.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through fall foliage. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends, and campgrounds fill during peak summer and the October leaf-peeping window, so reservations are worth making in advance for those periods. October weekends around the Blue Ridge Parkway fill earliest, driven by foliage traffic.
Spring brings wildflowers along Parkway overlooks and cool nights at elevation. Summer daytime highs are moderated by the ridge, though afternoon thunderstorms are common and can close trail sections briefly. Higher-elevation campgrounds provide relief from summer heat but can see rapid weather shifts.
Winter access is limited. Most Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds operate roughly from May through October, and Parkway segments close during ice or snow events. Private campgrounds near Cana operate on their own schedules, with several closing for part of the winter.
How to book campsites near Cana
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey, Utt's Campground, Beechnut Family Campground, and Mayberry Campground each take bookings through their own websites or by phone. KOA sites can also be booked through the KOA network.
For Parkway-run campgrounds, use the federal system. Reservations at Rocky Knob Campground can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov, with a portion of sites held as first-come, first-served. Book peak summer and October foliage weekends as soon as the six-month window opens. Fall arrivals without reservations can sometimes still find first-come sites at Rocky Knob midweek.
What to expect near Cana
Terrain is mountainous. Roads to campgrounds off the Parkway include grades and switchbacks, so larger RV renters should confirm site length limits before booking. Rocky Knob Campground accommodates a mix of tent campers and RVs, with maximum site lengths varying loop by loop, and most Parkway sites lack hookups.
Private parks near Cana generally offer water, electric, and sewer, with laundry and showers on site. Cell coverage is inconsistent once off the interstate, particularly along remote sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Bears are present in the surrounding mountains. Store food in vehicles or bear boxes and follow posted rules at all campgrounds.

An RV rental in Cana, VA is one of the most affordable ways to explore Virginia's Blue Ridge. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes can reach $250 to $400. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and price range on RVezy to spot the best deals fast, and message hosts directly if you have flexible dates.
virginia.org/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks/What license do I need to rent an RV in Cana, VA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cana. Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or trailers used for personal travel. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and the platform handles ID verification securely during checkout, so there's nothing extra to mail or upload at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll. Most first-time renters are surprised at how straightforward the process is, even for a 30-foot Class C.
dmv.virginia.gov/drivers/Is RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Cana, VA?
Yes, every RV rental in Cana booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head onto the Blue Ridge Parkway with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and it covers most damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on US 52 near Fancy Gap or need a tow off a mountain pull-off, one call dispatches help any time, day or night. That built-in safety net is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking their first Cana RV trip.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Cana RV trip plans change?
RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace period right after booking for a full refund of the rental amount. After that, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels your booking, RVezy refunds you or helps you rebook. Review the current cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before you book. Pro tip: reserve early to lock in peak fall-foliage weekends in October along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Cana.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Cana?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on plenty of Cana adventures. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. A pet-friendly RV rental in Cana pairs perfectly with leash-friendly trails at New River Trail State Park and Grayson Highlands State Park, where dogs love spotting the famous wild ponies from a safe distance. Most Virginia State Parks allow leashed pets in campgrounds for a small daily fee. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet deposit or cleaning fee, and pack a tie-out, towels for muddy paws, and proof of vaccinations. Cana's cool mountain evenings are paradise for dogs.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/pet-policyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Cana, VA?
Yes, RV delivery in Cana is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving a big rig through the mountains. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campground, cabin, or rental property, then walk you through the orientation so you know exactly how the awning, generator, and hookups work. Popular delivery destinations include Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, Lake Ridge RV Resort, and campgrounds just over the line in Mount Airy, NC. Delivery fees are usually based on distance, and some hosts include a free radius. Toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and message the host with your campground name and dates to confirm.

Cana is a fantastic launchpad for a Blue Ridge RV road trip, and mileage is simple to plan. Each host sets a daily mileage allowance (typically 100 to 150 miles per day), with extra miles available at a per-mile rate, and some Cana hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. From Cana, you're a quarter-mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway, 20 minutes to Mount Airy, NC (Andy Griffith's hometown), about 70 miles to Stone Mountain State Park, 90 minutes to Roanoke, and roughly 2 hours to Asheville, NC. Pro tip: if you're planning to cover the full Virginia section of the Parkway (217 miles), filter listings for higher mileage caps or unlimited packages.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/recreational-vehiclesWhen is the best time to visit Cana, VA for an RV trip?
Cana shines from late April through late October, with the absolute peak being mid-September through the third week of October when fall foliage lights up the Blue Ridge. Summers are pleasant at this 1,385-foot elevation, with July highs around 87°F and cool 65°F nights perfect for campfires. Spring brings wildflowers and dogwood blooms in April and May, while shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds and lower nightly rates. Winters are very cold (lows in the 20s with occasional snow), and many campgrounds close from December through March. Pro tip: book your Cana RV trip for the first two weekends of October for postcard-perfect foliage along the Parkway, and reserve at least 3-4 months ahead.
forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php?inputstring=Cana%2CVAI'm a first-time renter. Will I get help learning the RV?
You won't be on your own, that's the best part of renting in Cana. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery if they bring the RV to your campground), covering propane, generator, slide-outs, water tanks, leveling, and dump procedures. Many hosts also send video tutorials and a printed cheat sheet before your trip. If a question pops up at 9 p.m. while you're parked at Fancy Gap, you can message your host directly through the RVezy app, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C or small travel trailer for your debut Cana run, they're forgiving to drive and easy to park.

The Cana area has reliable cell service along I-77 and US 52, though signal can drop on remote stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, so screenshot your host's number before heading into the mountains. The nearest hospitals are Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy, NC and Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, VA.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best road trips and destinations from Cana, VA?
A Cana RV trip is a Blue Ridge dream because so much is within easy reach. Popular RV road trip routes from Cana include: the Virginia Blue Ridge Parkway north toward Roanoke (about 2 hours); Mount Airy, NC for Mayberry nostalgia (about 20 minutes); Pilot Mountain State Park (about 35 minutes); Stone Mountain State Park, NC (about 70 miles); Asheville, NC for breweries and the Biltmore (about 2.5 hours); and Grayson Highlands State Park for wild ponies (about 90 minutes west). Pro tip: build in a stop at Mabry Mill (Milepost 176) for one of the most-photographed spots on the Parkway.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/index.htmWhat fuel mileage and gas costs should I budget for in Cana, VA?
Budgeting fuel for your Cana RV trip is straightforward once you know the basics. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10-14 MPG combined). Virginia gas prices typically run near or slightly below the national average, with stations along I-77 in Hillsville and Fancy Gap offering convenient fill-ups before you reach the Parkway. Important: there are no gas stations on the Blue Ridge Parkway itself, so top off at the Fancy Gap exit (Milepost 199) before heading north or south. Pro tip: plan one long fuel stop per day rather than several short ones to save time on a mountain route.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cana, VA?
For peak season (mid-September through late October fall foliage), book campgrounds 3-6 months ahead, especially for weekends. Virginia State Parks like Grayson Highlands, New River Trail, and Claytor Lake use the reservevaparks.com system and open reservations 11 months in advance on a rolling basis. Private parks near Cana such as Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground and Lake Ridge RV Resort book directly through their own websites. Summer weekends typically fill 4-8 weeks out, while midweek stays in May or early September can often be booked just a few days ahead. Pro tip: lock in your RV rental in Cana on RVezy as soon as your campground dates are confirmed so both pieces are secured.
reservevaparks.com/What are local driving conditions like around Cana, VA?
Cana sits in the Blue Ridge foothills, so a little mountain awareness goes a long way. I-77 climbs steeply through Fancy Gap with grades around 6-7%, so use lower gears descending and watch for fog, which can roll in quickly. US 52 winding down to Mount Airy is scenic but has tight curves, so take it slow in a larger motorhome. The Blue Ridge Parkway has a 45 mph speed limit and no commercial traffic, making it a relaxed drive once you're on it. Pro tip: check 511 Virginia for real-time road conditions, especially before winter or after heavy rain, and avoid Fancy Gap in dense fog when possible.
511virginia.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Cana, VA?
Campgrounds near Cana run the full spectrum from full-service resorts to rustic mountain sites. Private parks like Lake Ridge RV Resort and Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground typically offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and camp stores. Virginia State Parks like New River Trail and Grayson Highlands provide electric and water hookups at most RV sites plus centralized dump stations and bathhouses. For dumping and water fills between stays, most private parks along I-77 welcome non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: Blue Ridge Parkway NPS campgrounds (like Rocky Knob at Milepost 167) have no hookups, so arrive with full fresh water and empty waste tanks.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/campingWhat features and amenities will my Cana, VA RV rental include?
A motorhome rental in Cana typically comes fully equipped for comfort. Expect a real bed (queen or king in larger rigs, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and generators for off-grid camping at Blue Ridge Parkway sites. Campervan rentals in Cana (Class B) are more compact but still include sleeping, cooking, and basic toilet facilities, perfect for solo travelers or couples touring the Parkway. Pro tip: review each listing's amenity list on RVezy and message the host if you need a specific item like a child seat anchor or extra bedding.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cana%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Cana, VA RV rental?
Hosts in Cana make trips easier with handy add-ons. Common extras include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, fire pits, generators, bike racks, and full propane fills. Many hosts also offer prep services like pre-stocked water tanks or grocery starter kits. Pickup and dropoff are typically at the host's home base near Cana or Mount Airy, with delivery available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (100-150 miles per day is typical, with some unlimited options). Pro tip: bundling delivery plus linens plus a generator usually costs less than adding them separately and makes a first-time family RV trip in Cana much smoother.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cana%2C%20VirginiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book (never directly to the host), and your funds are protected until your trip begins. A separate refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup, with the amount shown on the listing, and it's released after your trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To keep things smooth: do a careful walkthrough at pickup, take dated photos of the interior and exterior, follow the host's mileage and generator rules, and return with the same fuel and propane levels. That way your deposit comes back quickly and your Cana RV rental ends on a high note.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I drive my Cana RV rental on the Blue Ridge Parkway?
Yes, and the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway (Milepost 0 to 216) is one of the most RV-friendly scenic drives in America because it has zero tunnels, unlike the North Carolina section. From Cana, you can hop on at Fancy Gap (Milepost 199) and head north all the way to Shenandoah with no clearance worries. The posted speed limit is 45 mph, grades reach 6-7%, and there are no gas stations on the Parkway, so fuel up in Fancy Gap or Hillsville first. RVs under 30 feet handle the curves best. Pro tip: stop at Groundhog Mountain (Milepost 188) and Mabry Mill (Milepost 176) for iconic photos, and check nps.gov/blri for current road closures before you head out.
