Camping near Elgin, South Carolina
Elgin sits in Kershaw County in the South Carolina Midlands, roughly 20 miles northeast of Columbia and within easy reach of the Wateree River and Lake Wateree corridor. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because it puts several state parks, county parks, and private RV parks within a one-hour drive.
The closest reservable public campground is Andrew Jackson State Park, a 360-acre South Carolina state park on U.S. Highway 521 about nine miles north of Lancaster. To the west, Lake Wateree State Park sits on Desportes Island on Lake Wateree, 17 miles from Winnsboro and 14 miles from Ridgeway, drawing anglers to one of the state's oldest reservoirs.
For travelers heading toward Charlotte, private options include Crown Cove RV Park and the Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey, both in Fort Mill just south of the North Carolina line. Ebenezer Park, a York County park on Lake Wylie north of Rock Hill, adds a lakefront option about an hour and a half north of Elgin.
Things to do around Elgin
Water recreation is the main draw. Lake Wateree holds significant populations of crappie, bream, largemouth bass, catfish and striped bass, and Lake Wateree State Park operates a public boat ramp and a tackle shop with a refueling dock. Andrew Jackson State Park spreads across 360 acres and includes an 18-acre lake with an island in the middle featuring hiking trails, plus fishing, boating with electric motors only, and biking.
History sits close to the campsite. Andrew Jackson State Park features a museum detailing the boyhood of the nation's seventh president, who grew up in what was then the Waxhaws of the South Carolina backcountry, along with a replica 18th-century one-room schoolhouse and living history programs.
For family day trips, Carowinds theme park is a short drive from the Fort Mill campgrounds, and Ebenezer Park adds a swimming area, fishing pier, and pickleball court on Lake Wylie.
