Campgrounds and RV parks near Myrtle Beach, SC

The beach itself is the main draw, with wide, gently sloping sand and warm summer surf. Families gravitate to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, the SkyWheel, Broadway at the Beach, and Barefoot Landing for shopping, dining, and mini-golf, a local specialty with dozens of themed courses along Kings Highway. Outdoor options extend beyond the sand. Myrtle Beach State Park has a nature trail, some of the best surf fishing in South Carolina, and a fishing pier, along with ranger programs during peak season. Huntington Beach State Park to the south is known for birding and the Atalaya Castle historic site, while Brookgreen Gardens offers sculpture gardens and a small zoo. Anglers can book inshore and offshore charters out of Murrells Inlet and Little River, and paddlers use the Waccamaw River and salt marshes for kayaking.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when ocean water is warm, schools are out, and beachfront parks are near full occupancy. Sites at Ocean Lakes Family Campground, Pirateland Family Campground, and Lakewood Camping Resort commonly book several months in advance for summer weekends and holiday periods, and Myrtle Beach State Park's oceanfront sites are among the hardest reservations to secure in the South Carolina state park system. Spring and fall are the shoulder seasons preferred by many RV travelers. March through May brings mild temperatures, lower humidity, and events like the Carolina Country Music Fest and various rallies. September through November has warm ocean water into October and generally lighter crowds, though Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August through October and can force evacuations or temporary closures along the coast. Winter is mild but cool. Most private parks stay open year-round with reduced amenities, and snowbirds fill many long-term sites from January through March.

Beachfront resorts on the south end are large, amenity-heavy properties with pools, water parks, camp stores, golf-cart traffic, and paved interior roads. Sites are generally full-hookup with 30/50-amp service, and many are pull-through. Expect a lively, family-oriented atmosphere in summer rather than a quiet nature setting. Myrtle Beach State Park is the opposite in tone: shaded, wooded sites under live oaks and pines, a short walk to the beach. The campground includes 140 standard sites with electric and water and 138 full hookup sites with electric, water, and sewer, and a dump station is available. Cell coverage across the area is strong, and grocery, propane, and RV service are widely available along Highway 17. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and no-see-ums, are common from late spring through early fall, particularly at dusk near marsh areas.
