Scale mountains and soak up Alaskan culture with a camper rental in Anchorage. Anchorage is the cultural heart of Alaska, boasting many of the state's best attractions, amenities, and eateries. Anchorage also provides easy access to several sublime landscapes, including Chugach State Park, the third-largest state park in the U.S., and the 650,000-acre Kenai Fjords National Park.
Summer is undoubtedly the best time to book an RV rental in Alaska. Temperatures stay in the low 70s, warm enough to get out and explore the best of the Alaskan wilderness. And with an average of 18 hours of sunlight a day, you won’t be short of opportunities to get outdoors. Summer in Anchorage also welcomes the bloom of roughly 80,000 flowers across the city. The best summer festivals include the Alaska State Fair and the Alaska Oceans Summer Festival.

Taking your Anchorage motorhome rental downtown? Anchorage is reasonably easy to get around in an RV. That said, Alaskan drivers rank among the worst in the country, so pay attention when on the roads. You shouldn't have too much trouble parking your fifth wheel in Anchorage — Alaska is one of the most RV-friendly states in the U.S. There are several places you park for the day downtown, like Cabela's and any of the Fred Meyer stores.
Many tourists visit Alaska for winter sports, and there are few better places to hit the slopes near Anchorage than the Alyeska Resort. A lavish resort and hotel on the slopes of Mount Alyeska, the Alyeska Resort is home to over 1,600 skiable acres and 79 named hiking trails. The resort is ideal for skiers looking to test their skills, with most runs suitable for intermediate and expert skiers. When you're not skiing, spend your days dog-sledding, or ride the aerial tram to the top of Mount Alyeska for panoramic views of the Chugach Mountains. Don't discount Alyeska Resort during the summer, either. Take your RV to the charming town of Girdwood and spend the day wandering around, hiking, or riding the tram to the top of the mountain to bike downhill at the bike terrain park.
Plan a day-out your whole crew will love at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. This 200-acre conservation park aims to preserve local wildlife and teach people about animal care. The sanctuary takes in injured or abandoned animals and uses them to help to teach visitors about the local ecosystem. During your visit, you’ll come face-to-face with many of the amazing critters native to Alaska, including bald eagles, lynx, and brown bears.
No trip to Anchorage is complete without spending a day or two at Chugach State Park. Covering nearly 500,000 acres, Chugach State Park boasts dozens of hiking trails that weave through dense woodlands and over rugged mountains. Hike through cottonwood groves and up to the 200-foot-tall Thunderbird Falls, or hike up the popular Flattop Mountain for views of Denali, the highest peak in North America.

Anchorage RV campgrounds are generally tucked away deep in the nearby wilderness, providing campers with plenty of peace and quiet. Chugach State Park is home to some of the best campgrounds near Anchorage, including the Eagle River Campground. This campground is conveniently located less than 15 miles from downtown, just off the Glenn Highway. There are no hookups at this campground; however, there are two dump stations and flushing toilets. Sites also come with a fire pit and a picnic table. Eagle River Campground is ideal for nature lovers, with nature trails that lead from the camp to fishing along the Eagle River.
If you and your crew prefer to park up deeper into Chugach State Park, check out Eklutna Lake Campground. This campground is situated 37 miles northeast of Anchorage, along the serene Eklutna Lake. Like Eagle River, the Eklutna Lake Campground is primitive with no hookups. Sites come with a fire pit and picnic tables. There are few better places to camp for experiencing the best of Chugach State Park, with ATV tours, hiking opportunities, and fishing on Eklutna Lake. Useful amenities include running water and flushing toilets.
Campers heading north to check out Denali National Park will want to stay at Big Bear RV Park & Campground. Located in Palmer, 38 miles north of Anchorage, Big Bear Campground and RV Park is one of the best-equipped campgrounds around. Sites come with full or partial hookups that support 30-/50-amp electricity. It's also a great spot for canine campers, with dog-friendly sites and a pet station. Activities around camp include classic games like horseshoes and a playground for kids. Home comforts include a laundry room, hot showers, and a dump station.
