Late May through September offers the most reliable access, with warm days, long daylight, and all park roads and services open for RV travelers. June and September are sweet spots, with fewer crowds than peak July and milder afternoons for hiking. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring dramatic skies but rapidly changing weather, so RVers should watch forecasts closely. Temperatures in the spring and fall seasons can vary dramatically and change abruptly within short time periods.

Badlands Loop Road is the main scenic drive through the park's North Unit, linking overlooks and trailheads. This two-lane paved road is appropriate for all motor vehicles but does include several steep passes and sections with reduced speed limits. Paved pullouts along the route make it accessible for most RVs. nps.gov/thingstodo/badl-loop-road.htm
The Notch Trail is a dramatic 1.5-mile round-trip hike that climbs a log ladder to a cliffside overlook of the White River Valley. After meandering through a canyon, this trail climbs a log ladder and follows a ledge to the Notch for a dramatic view of the White River Valley, beginning at the south end of the Door and Window parking area. Not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights and treacherous during or after heavy rains. nps.gov/thingstodo/hiking-badl.htm
The Door Trail is a short boardwalk hike through a natural break in the Badlands Wall. A wheelchair-accessible quarter-mile boardwalk leads through a break in the Badlands Wall known as the Door to a panoramic view of the Badlands. It shares a large paved lot with the Notch and Window trails. nps.gov/places/door-trail.htm
Window Trail is a quick, family-friendly walk to a natural opening in the Badlands Wall. This short trail leads to a natural window in the Badlands Wall with a view of an intricately eroded canyon. Window Trail is a full boardwalk leading out to a viewpoint with railings. nps.gov/thingstodo/hiking-badl.htm
Castle Trail is the longest designated hike in Badlands National Park, crossing mixed-grass prairie along the base of the buttes. The longest trail in the park begins at the Door and Window parking area and travels five miles one way to the Fossil Exhibit Trail, and the relatively level path passes along some badlands formations. nps.gov/thingstodo/hiking-badl.htm
Fossil Exhibit Trail is a fully accessible boardwalk with interpretive displays about the park's prehistoric wildlife. Fully accessible boardwalk trail features fossil replicas and exhibits of now extinct creatures that once roamed the area. The trailhead lot accommodates larger vehicles. nps.gov/thingstodo/hiking-badl.htm
Sage Creek Rim Road is an unpaved scenic road branching off Badlands Loop Road with excellent bison and prairie dog viewing. Sage Creek Rim Road can also be accessed from Badlands Loop Road, with the intersection just north of the Pinnacles Overlook. The unpaved road may temporarily close after winter storms and spring rains. nps.gov/thingstodo/campgrounds-badl.htm
Cliff Shelf Nature Trail is a short loop along the Badlands Wall with elevated views over the White River Valley. Badlands National Park, SD, United States
The park sits off Interstate 90 in southwestern South Dakota, roughly 75 miles east of Rapid City (about a 1.5-hour drive) and 50 miles west of Kadoka. The Loop Road can be accessed by heading south from Interstate 90 via Exit 110 (Wall) or Exit 131. Rapid City Regional Airport is the nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent RV travelers. This two-lane paved road is appropriate for all motor vehicles but does include several steep passes and sections with reduced speed limits, so use low gears on descents and expect crosswinds across the open prairie.
