Late April through June and September into late October are the best windows, offering mild temperatures, open roads, and either spring wildflowers or vivid Hudson Valley fall foliage. Summer weekends draw very heavy crowds and parking fills early, so midweek visits are strongly recommended for larger rigs. Winter brings snow, ice, and possible road or facility closures, though the park remains open for day use year round.

The Major Welch Trail ascends from Hessian Lake to the 1,289-foot summit of Bear Mountain and returns via a stone-stepped section of the Appalachian Trail. The 3.8-mile loop delivers panoramic views of the Hudson River and Manhattan skyline on clear days. Trailhead parking is at the main Bear Mountain lots, which accommodate larger vehicles.
Perkins Memorial Drive is a paved summit road that carries visitors to the stone observation tower atop Bear Mountain for sweeping views of the Hudson Highlands. The road is seasonal, typically open from April through late November, and is suitable for most RVs, though very long rigs should check conditions at the gate.
A flat 1.3-mile paved and gravel path circles Hessian Lake at the foot of Bear Mountain. The loop is stroller and wheelchair friendly and passes the Bear Mountain Inn, picnic areas, and rental boats in summer. Parking is adjacent in the main RV-accessible day-use lots.
The Trailside Museums and Zoo is a small outdoor complex exhibiting native Hudson Highlands wildlife, geology, and history along a short walking path that doubles as the lowest point on the Appalachian Trail. It is an accessible family stop near the main parking area.
Iona Island is a 153-acre National Natural Landmark marsh along the Hudson River within Bear Mountain State Park, reached by a causeway off US-9W. The site is prized for eagle watching in winter and migrating waterfowl in spring and fall, with roadside pull-offs for shorter vehicles.
Popolopen Torne is a rocky 942-foot peak just north of Bear Mountain offering a veterans memorial cairn and 360-degree views over the Hudson and West Point. The roughly 3-mile loop is short but steep near the summit. Parking is at the Fort Montgomery trailhead off US-9W.
A paved riverfront promenade runs from the main park area out toward the Bear Mountain Bridge, offering Hudson River views and access to the historic span. It is an easy walk suitable for all ages and connects to picnic pavilions near the day-use lots.

Thank you Wendy for the opportunity to travel the country. 💙 We had an amazing time and cannot wait to do it again. Wendy is an amazing person. She also allows flexibility with pick up and drop off. We highly recommend her for future rentals.

It’s a brand new vehicle in excellent conditions. The Mercedes van drives smoothly and easily and all the interior amenities and accessories are of very high quality (best pots and pans we ever had in an RV). It performs at its best when plugged in overnight as the fridge is spacious and energy hungry. We had a super time and would definitely rent again from Howard who is always available available to help and very responsive. Highly recommended

We loved our trip in this RV. Lots of room for our family of 4 and a pleasure to drive. Impressive machine! Howard was a great host, very communicative and no surprises. I’d definitely recommend and would rent again.

Bear Mountain State Park, NY, United States
Bear Mountain sits at the junction of US-9W, US-202, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland and Orange Counties, about an hour north of New York City and roughly 90 minutes south of Albany. RV drivers should note that the Palisades Interstate Parkway is restricted to passenger vehicles and prohibits trailers, buses, and most RVs, so motorhomes and tow setups must use US-9W, US-6, or I-87 (the New York State Thruway) instead. The Bear Mountain Bridge approach on US-6/202 includes steep grades and tight curves that demand caution in longer coaches. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Stewart International (SWF) in Newburgh, with Westchester County (HPN) and Newark (EWR) as larger alternatives.
