Late spring through early fall, roughly May through October, is the best window for RV travel, with mild temperatures, open campground facilities, and swimming at Canopus Beach through the summer season. September and early October are a favorite shoulder season thanks to Hudson Valley fall color, smaller crowds, and cooler sleeping weather. July and August bring the busiest weekends, so reservations fill quickly. Winter visits focus on day use and cross-country skiing, since the campground is closed.

Canopus Lake is the centerpiece of the park, offering a sandy swimming beach, bathhouse, and rental boats during the summer season. RV parking is available at the main beach lot, and the adjacent Canopus Lake Campground puts campers within a short walk of the water.
The Appalachian National Scenic Trail crosses the park for several miles, with trailheads accessible from NY 301. Day hikers can sample classic AT ridgeline walking with views over Canopus Lake without committing to a full thru-hike. nps.gov/appa/
The Three Lakes Trail is a popular loop that links Canopus Lake, John Allen Pond, and Hidden Lake through forested terrain. Expect rolling ups and downs, stone walls, and quiet water views, with trail parking off NY 301.
The Taconic Outdoor Education Center offers nature programs, guided walks, and groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails in winter. It is a useful starting point for families and first-time visitors orienting themselves in the park.
The Pelton Pond Nature Trail is a short loop around a scenic pond just off NY 301, suitable for a quick leg-stretch from the campground. Interpretive signage covers local geology and wildlife, making it a good introduction to the park for kids.
Fahnestock has a designated network of multi-use trails open to mountain bikers, with singletrack and doubletrack through Hudson Highlands terrain. Riders typically stage from pull-off lots along NY 301 that can fit smaller RVs and tow vehicles.
Canopus Lake and the park's smaller ponds offer freshwater fishing for bass, pickerel, and panfish with a valid New York State fishing license. Shoreline access is straightforward from the beach area and several pullouts, and cartop boat launches are available.

Thank you Wendy for the opportunity to travel the country. 💙 We had an amazing time and cannot wait to do it again. Wendy is an amazing person. She also allows flexibility with pick up and drop off. We highly recommend her for future rentals.

It’s a brand new vehicle in excellent conditions. The Mercedes van drives smoothly and easily and all the interior amenities and accessories are of very high quality (best pots and pans we ever had in an RV). It performs at its best when plugged in overnight as the fridge is spacious and energy hungry. We had a super time and would definitely rent again from Howard who is always available available to help and very responsive. Highly recommended

We loved our trip in this RV. Lots of room for our family of 4 and a pleasure to drive. Impressive machine! Howard was a great host, very communicative and no surprises. I’d definitely recommend and would rent again.

Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, NY, United States
The park sits along the Taconic State Parkway near Cold Spring and Carmel, about 60 miles north of New York City (roughly 75 minutes) and about 90 miles south of Albany (about 90 minutes). Note that the Taconic State Parkway is a parkway that prohibits commercial vehicles and trucks, so larger motorhomes and trailers should plan routes via US 9, NY 301, and the Interstate 84 corridor instead. The terrain is rolling Hudson Highlands rather than mountain passes, but NY 301 through the park is winding and hilly, so drive slowly with longer rigs. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Westchester County Airport (HPN) and Stewart International (SWF), with Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), and JFK also within reach.
