Late May through early October offers the most reliable conditions for RV travelers, with mild temperatures, dry trails, and full access to the salt marsh boardwalks. July and August are peak months and can bring fog and humidity along the coast, so shoulder seasons in June and September often deliver better hiking weather and fewer crowds. Fall color along the wooded sections peaks in October. Winter visits are possible on foot but parking lots may be unplowed after storms.

The Salt Marsh Trail is a flat, multi-use path that follows a former rail corridor across the Cole Harbour and West Lawrencetown salt marshes. The route offers expansive water and marsh views, birding opportunities, and several bridges over tidal channels. It connects into the wider Trans Canada Trail network.
This interior loop winds through mixed Acadian forest, old farm clearings, and wetlands within the park's core. Interpretive signs describe the land's Mi'kmaq and Acadian farming history. Footing is mostly crushed stone and packed earth.
The converted rail bed through the park is popular with cyclists and gravel riders thanks to its gentle grade and long distance. Riders can extend the route east toward Lawrencetown Beach or west into Dartmouth. Shared use with walkers is the norm, so mind pedestrians.
The Cole Harbour salt marsh is a staging area for migrating shorebirds, waterfowl, and raptors. Boardwalks and trail viewpoints along the marsh edge provide long sightlines across mudflats at low tide. Spring and fall migration bring the greatest variety.
The park is widely used by locals for dog walking on the main trail network. Leashes are required and waste must be packed out. Wider gravel paths near the main trailhead are the most dog friendly.
Informal picnic spots near the main parking areas make a convenient lunch stop for RVers exploring the Eastern Shore. Tables are limited, so pack a blanket as a backup. Pair with a short walk to a marsh viewpoint.
The vast tidal flats and grasses of Cole Harbour create strong subject matter at sunrise and sunset. Low tide exposes channels and shorebirds, while high tide brings sweeping reflections. The long, straight rail trail makes a natural leading line.
Camper van was absolutely amazing. Comfortable bed, tons of light, fridge, water and everything you could possibly need! Gas wasn’t much more than an suv would be. Dean is a fantastic guy and made we knew everything about the van before heading out and was great dealing with little hiccups along the way. Would recommend this way of travel (and renting through Dean) to anyone!

Caroline and her husband were wonderful hosts! They took the time to get us up to speed on their van, and point out what we needed to know. The van came well equipped with stove, camping chairs and even an awning! We great enjoyed our trip in their van!

Cole Harbour Heritage Provincial Park, NS, Canada
The park is about a 20 to 25 minute drive from downtown Halifax via Highway 111 and Cole Harbour Road, roughly 15 km. From Dartmouth the main trailheads are 10 to 15 minutes away. RV drivers should note that access roads are standard urban and suburban streets with no tunnels or steep grades, but trailhead lots are small and not designed for large Class A motorhomes or long trailers, so scout parking in advance. The nearest airport for fly-and-rent trips is Halifax Stanfield International Airport, about 40 km north of the park.
