Late May through September is the most comfortable window for RV visits, with daytime highs generally in the 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and full campground services available. July and August bring peak demand tied to Brainerd Lakes tourism, so reservations are strongly recommended. September and early October offer cooler nights, fall color along the river, and lighter crowds, making them a strong shoulder-season choice. Winters are cold and snowy, and while the park stays open for day use, RV amenities are limited.

The Old Crow Wing townsite is a self-guided historic walk through the footprint of a 19th-century fur-trading community at the confluence of the Mississippi and Crow Wing rivers. Interpretive signs mark building locations, and a restored Ojibwe chapel stands near the site. Paths are flat and stroller-friendly, with parking suitable for RVs near the trailhead.
Visible wagon ruts from the historic Red River Trail cut through the park forest and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A short hiking path follows the depressions left by decades of ox cart traffic between St. Paul and the Red River Valley. The section within the park is recognized as the Red River Trail: Crow Wing Section. npgallery.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/90002201
The park offers direct access to a calm stretch of the Upper Mississippi River ideal for canoes and kayaks. A canoe landing inside the park allows visitors to launch for short floats or connect with longer river routes. Current is gentle and the water is suitable for beginner paddlers in summer.
Chippewa Lookout is a short hiking spur that climbs a low bluff above the Mississippi River to a scenic overlook. The trail passes through mixed pine and hardwood forest and is a popular sunset stop. Expect a modest hill climb but no technical terrain.
The park maintains about 18 miles of hiking trails that wind through oak savanna, pine forest, and along the river bluffs. A connector leads toward regional trail systems including the Paul Bunyan, Heartland, and Soo Line trails. Routes are well-signed and suitable for day hikes of varied length.
Designated mountain biking trails loop through the wooded portions of the park. Terrain is rolling with sandy soils typical of the Mississippi River corridor. Trails are marked and maintained for intermediate riders.
Anglers can fish for smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and panfish from the park's river frontage. Shore access is available at the canoe landing and at several pull-offs along park roads. A Minnesota fishing license is required.
The park supports white-tailed deer, river otter, beaver, and a variety of songbirds and raptors along the river corridor. Early morning and evening hours from the Chippewa Lookout and river overlooks offer the best viewing. Binoculars are recommended.
Needed additional sleeping space at our son’s cabin and this worked beautifully. It was dropped off and set up, so very easy. Would definitely rent again.

We needed additional sleeping space for an event we hosted and this camper fit perfectly. Very comfortable sleeping for three couples. They delivered, set it up and gave us a quick run down of where things were and how to use it. Very helpful. It was clean and well maintained.
