Spring (March through May) and fall (October and November) are the most comfortable months, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer biting insects. Summer brings hot, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak crowds tied to nearby Gulf Coast beaches, so reservations fill quickly. Winter is cool and generally dry, making it a good shoulder season for snowbird RVers who want quiet campsites and open trails.

The Rocky Bayou Trail is a short shoreline loop that follows the bluff above Rocky Bayou with views across the water. The easy footpath winds through pines and hardwoods and offers benches and photo stops. Trailhead parking near the main day-use area accommodates most RVs.
The Sand Pine Trail is a short interior loop that showcases the park's stand of mature sand pines, some of the oldest in Florida. The path is flat with soft sand and pine-needle footing, suitable for most hikers. It starts from a parking area inside the park with room for tow vehicles.
The Red Cedar Trail is a short nature path that leads through hardwood hammock down to the edge of Rocky Bayou. Hikers pass red cedars, magnolias, and live oaks on the way to quiet water views. The route is flat and family friendly.
The park's boat ramp provides direct access to Rocky Bayou for motorboats, kayaks, and canoes. Paddlers can explore sheltered coves, fish for bass and bream, and connect to the larger Choctawhatchee Bay system. A paved parking area near the ramp offers space for trucks and small trailers.
Fishing is a popular activity on Rocky Bayou, with anglers targeting largemouth bass, bream, and saltwater species that move up from the bay. Shore access is available near the boat ramp and picnic areas. A valid Florida fishing license is required for most anglers.
The designated swimming area on Rocky Bayou offers a sandy entry and calm, shallow water that is popular with families. There are no lifeguards, so visitors swim at their own risk. Restrooms and picnic tables are located nearby.
Shaded picnic areas with tables and grills sit along the bayou shoreline and near the main parking area. Visitors often spot herons, egrets, ospreys, deer, and gopher tortoises within the park. The flat, short paths between picnic spots are easy to walk from RV day-use parking.
We absolutely loved staying in John's RV. If you are worried about the AC not being cold enough, have no fear, it works wonderfully even in Florida's heat. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your wonderful RV. If we need to rent again, we will absolutely be reaching out.

Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, FL, United States
The park sits just off State Road 20 east of Niceville, about 5 miles from downtown Niceville and roughly 20 miles (about 30 minutes) from Destin and Fort Walton Beach. From Pensacola it is about 60 miles (just over an hour) west, and from Panama City it is about 55 miles (around 1 hour 15 minutes) east along US 98 and SR 20. The nearest commercial airport is Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS), about 10 miles away. Roads in are flat two-lane highways with no tunnels or mountain grades, but the interior park road is narrow with tight turns, so larger rigs should take campsite access slowly.
