Best time to visit Hill Country State Natural Area

October through April offers the most comfortable weather, with mild daytime highs, cool nights, and low humidity that is ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Spring, particularly March and April, brings bluebonnets and other wildflowers across the hills. Summer months are hot with highs often in the 90s, and shade is limited on exposed trails. Winter weekends can be busy with equestrian groups, so reservations are recommended even in cooler months.

Kristen was a fantastic host. We arrived to everything set up and hooked up. The RV was clean and clean linens and towels were on the beds. The outdoor kitchen was perfect for breakfast and the outside fridge was used constantly. Communication was amazing. We had a flight cancelled and Kristen made it work so we didn't miss a thing.

Such an awesome experience. We spent a few days at Colorado Bend State Park and the trailer was perfect. There were not any water/electrical hookups at our campsite, but we were able to fill the RV with potable water, and run the necessary items (lights, water pump, heater) on battery/generator. Such an awesome trip and this travel trailer made the experience much more enjoyable! Karina and Ivan were hospitable AND ensured that we had everything we needed for our trip. 10/10 recommend.

How to get to Hill Country State Natural Area

The park is reached via Bandera, roughly 50 miles (about 1 hour) northwest of San Antonio, and lies about 10 miles southwest of Bandera off FM 1077, a narrow rural road with several low-water creek crossings that can be impassable after heavy rain. From San Antonio International Airport (SAT), the nearest major fly-and-rent hub, allow about 70 miles of driving. RV travelers should watch for tight curves, narrow shoulders, and unpaved sections inside the park, and large rigs should avoid attempting the low-water crossings during wet weather.
