October through April offers the most comfortable weather, with mild daytime highs, cool nights, and low humidity that is ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Spring, particularly March and April, brings bluebonnets and other wildflowers across the hills. Summer months are hot with highs often in the 90s, and shade is limited on exposed trails. Winter weekends can be busy with equestrian groups, so reservations are recommended even in cooler months.

Twin Peaks Loop is a classic Hill Country hike climbing two prominent ridges with panoramic views across the park. The route links several shared-use trails and is popular with day hikers staging from the main trailhead parking area. Expect rocky footing and limited shade. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
Hill Country State Natural Area is one of the premier equestrian destinations in Texas, with over 40 miles of shared-use trails open to horses. Equestrian campsites and a horse corral are available near the trailheads. Bring your own horse or book a guided ride with a local outfitter in Bandera. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
The park offers miles of technical singletrack and doubletrack suitable for intermediate and advanced mountain bikers. Routes climb rocky ridges and cross seasonal creeks, with connections to longer loops through the backcountry. Bikers should yield to horses on shared trails. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
Seasonal swimming holes along West Verde Creek provide a place to cool off after a ride or hike. Water levels depend on recent rainfall and flow can be low in summer. The creek area is also good for wading and wildlife watching. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
The natural area supports white-tailed deer, wild turkey, armadillos, and a variety of Hill Country songbirds including painted buntings in spring. Quiet early morning walks near creeks and meadows offer the best viewing opportunities. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
Backpackers can reserve designated primitive hike-in sites deep in the park for a true Hill Country wilderness experience. Sites have no facilities, so visitors must pack in all water and pack out all waste. Trails to the sites range from one to several miles. tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/hill-country
Low light pollution and open ridgelines make the park a solid choice for stargazing. Clear, dry nights in fall and winter offer the best views of the Milky Way. Bring a red-filter flashlight to protect night vision at camp.
Kristen was a fantastic host. We arrived to everything set up and hooked up. The RV was clean and clean linens and towels were on the beds. The outdoor kitchen was perfect for breakfast and the outside fridge was used constantly. Communication was amazing. We had a flight cancelled and Kristen made it work so we didn't miss a thing.

Such an awesome experience. We spent a few days at Colorado Bend State Park and the trailer was perfect. There were not any water/electrical hookups at our campsite, but we were able to fill the RV with potable water, and run the necessary items (lights, water pump, heater) on battery/generator. Such an awesome trip and this travel trailer made the experience much more enjoyable! Karina and Ivan were hospitable AND ensured that we had everything we needed for our trip. 10/10 recommend.

Hill Country State Natural Area, TX, United States
The park is reached via Bandera, roughly 50 miles (about 1 hour) northwest of San Antonio, and lies about 10 miles southwest of Bandera off FM 1077, a narrow rural road with several low-water creek crossings that can be impassable after heavy rain. From San Antonio International Airport (SAT), the nearest major fly-and-rent hub, allow about 70 miles of driving. RV travelers should watch for tight curves, narrow shoulders, and unpaved sections inside the park, and large rigs should avoid attempting the low-water crossings during wet weather. Austin is approximately 110 miles (around 2 hours) to the northeast.
