Nestled within the 5,000-acre Hill Country State Natural Area northwest of San Antonio, the Trailhead Equestrian Camp is a premier destination for horse-friendly camping in the Texas Hill Country. Located off Bandera Creek Road in Bandera — famously known as the Cowboy Capital of the World — this campground offers direct access to rugged canyons, scenic plateaus, and tranquil creek bottoms that define the region's breathtaking landscape. Equestrian campers will appreciate the dedicated facilities including water access and vault toilets, while the surrounding trail network winds through over 5,000 acres of pristine wilderness ideal for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. The campsite accommodates big rigs with pull-through sites available, and amenities include grills and picnic tables for a comfortable outdoor stay. Vault toilets are conveniently located on-site. The natural area maintains a rustic, self-sufficient atmosphere — there is no park store, so arriving prepared is essential. Beyond the park, the town of Bandera offers dude ranches, river activities, and rodeos for additional Texas Hill Country experiences. Proof of a current Coggins test is required for all horses. Reservations can be made through the Texas State Parks reservation system.
