Late October through mid-November is the signature season, when the bigtooth maples peak and day-use reservations fill quickly. Spring, from March into May, brings wildflowers, nesting songbirds, and mild temperatures ideal for hiking. Summer days are hot with highs regularly in the 90s Fahrenheit, so RVers often target early mornings and seek out shaded creek-side sites. Winter is quiet and cool with occasional freezes, making it a good shoulder season for solitude.

The Maple Trail is a short, mostly level path along Can Creek that showcases the park's famous bigtooth maples. It is the most accessible way to see fall color and works well for families and first-time visitors.
The East Trail is the park's signature hike, a roughly 4.5-mile loop climbing to scenic ridgetop overlooks above the Sabinal River. Expect a steep ascent to Monkey Rock and panoramic views of the canyons.
The West Trail follows the Sabinal River deep into remote canyons with small waterfalls and quiet swimming holes. It connects to primitive backcountry campsites for those wanting a longer trek.
Small spring-fed ponds along Can Creek offer shaded spots to cool off in summer. The area is a short walk from the main day-use parking lot.
Lost Maples is a top Texas birding destination, with golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos present in spring. Two designated bird blinds near the headquarters make viewing easy for all ability levels.
From late October into November, the canyon walls and creek corridors light up with red, orange, and gold maple leaves. Early morning light along the Maple Trail and East Trail is a favorite for photographers.
The park's remote Hill Country location provides dark skies with minimal light pollution. Clear nights reveal the Milky Way directly from developed campsites.
We have an annual family gathering at Garner State Park to celebrate my granddaughter’s birthday, and this RV was absolutely perfect for the occasion. It was spotless, well-maintained, and had all the amenities we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable camping trip. It truly added to the experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Lost Maples State Natural Area, TX, United States
The park sits on Ranch Road 187, about 5 miles north of Vanderpool and roughly 90 miles northwest of San Antonio, a drive of about 2 hours. Austin is about 3 hours northeast, and Uvalde is roughly an hour south. RV drivers should be prepared for narrow, winding Hill Country roads with sharp curves, low-water crossings that can flood after heavy rain, and limited shoulders on RR 187 and FM 337. San Antonio International Airport is the closest major airport for fly-and-rent travelers.
