Late May through September is the prime window for RV travel, when Lake Michigan beaches, swim areas, and campground facilities are fully open and daytime highs are warm. June and September offer a good balance of pleasant weather and thinner crowds than the July to August beach peak. Dunewood Campground is open roughly April through October, so April and October work for shoulder-season trips but expect cool nights and limited swimming. Winter visits are possible for day use, but the campground is closed and lake-effect snow can disrupt travel.

Mount Baldy is a 126-foot living sand dune on the eastern edge of the park, accessible to the summit only on scheduled ranger-led hikes. The summit is closed to general public use for safety and restoration, so these ranger-led hikes are the way to experience views from one of the tallest dunes in the park. The Mount Baldy parking lot off U.S. Highway 12 accommodates standard vehicles and smaller RVs. nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/mb16.htm
The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center on Indiana 49 in Porter is the best first stop for maps, ranger advice, and trip planning. The lot has space for larger vehicles and is an easy pull-off from I-94. nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm
West Beach is the park's developed Lake Michigan swim beach with lifeguards in summer, a bathhouse, and a large paved parking lot. A short loop trail climbs over the dunes for panoramic lake and skyline views. Trailhead location: West Beach Parking Lot.
Cowles Bog is a 4.7-mile loop through wetlands, oak savanna, and dune ridges, ending at a quiet stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline. It is one of the most physically demanding hikes in the park. Trailhead location: Cowles Bog North Gravel Parking Lot.
The Glenwood Dunes trail network offers loops of varying length through wooded dunes and is popular for hiking and, in winter, cross-country skiing. Total length: about 7.1 miles. Trailhead location: Glenwood Dunes Parking Lot. The gravel lot accommodates trailers and smaller RVs.
This paved lakefront walk offers accessible Lake Michigan access, a pavilion, and views of the Port of Indiana. Total length: about 1.5 miles. Trailhead location: Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Parking Lot. The lot is paved and RV-friendly.
The Paul H. Douglas Center anchors the western end of the park with exhibits and trails through rare black oak savanna out to Lake Michigan. Total length: about 3.5 miles round trip. Trailhead location: Paul H. Douglas Center Parking Lot. The center has accessible parking and restrooms.
Kemil Beach provides quieter Lake Michigan access near Beverly Shores, with a connected loop climbing the Dune Ridge for inland views over the Great Marsh. Trailhead location: Kemil Beach Parking Lot.
This RV was perfect! Communication pre rental was great. It was our first time renting an RV and we were given a very in depth description of where everything is and how it works. It was clean, delivered to our doorstep and ready for our use upon arrival. Thank you!

Indiana Dunes National Park, IN, United States
The park lies along U.S. Highway 12 and Interstate 94 in Northwest Indiana, roughly an hour (about 50 miles) east of downtown Chicago and about 2.5 hours (140 miles) northwest of Indianapolis. The nearest major fly-and-rent airports are Chicago O'Hare and Chicago Midway, with South Bend International about an hour to the east. RV drivers should plan routes that avoid low-clearance parkway bridges in the Chicago area and use I-80/I-90 or I-94 truck routes; some park access roads and beach lots have tight turns and length limits, so confirm trailhead parking before towing in. Toll roads (Indiana Toll Road, Chicago Skyway) charge by axle, which affects larger rigs.
