Kings Canyon National Park, CA, United States
The park is 45 miles from Visalia (about 1 hour 30 minutes) and 69 miles from Fresno (about 1 hour 15 minutes). Highway 180 from Fresno is the recommended RV approach. Highway 198 from Visalia is not recommended for RVs over 22 feet and adds 2-3 extra hours of driving. Note that vehicles 24 feet or longer are not advised on some park roads, and the Cedar Grove road closes from November through April due to winter snow. Nearest major airport is Fresno/Yosemite International.
May through October provides the best combination of warm weather, accessible roads, and flowing waterfalls. July and August see peak visitation but offer reliable sunshine and warmth. April offers spectacular waterfalls as snow melts, and late September through early October provide comfortable temperatures with fewer crowds. Note that Cedar Grove closes from mid-November through late April due to snow, so plan accordingly if visiting the lower-elevation canyon areas.
