Late fall through early spring, roughly November through March, is the best window for RV travel. Cooler, drier weather keeps mosquitoes down, prescribed burns open up sightlines, and migratory birds fill the prairie. Shoulder months of October and April bring warm days with fewer visitors, while summer is hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms.

The park is a designated International Dark Sky Park with a dedicated astronomy pad offering unobstructed views of the Milky Way. It is one of South Florida's premier locations for night-sky viewing, far from urban light pollution. Bring binoculars or a telescope and plan for moonless nights.
The preserve is one of the last strongholds of the endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow. Early morning hikes and ranger-led buggy tours offer chances to spot sparrows, crested caracaras, sandhill cranes, and burrowing owls. Bring a spotting scope for open-prairie sightings.
This flat, open loop follows former ranch roads across the dry prairie. Expansive horizons, wildflowers, and wildlife sightings make it a signature day hike. Carry plenty of water and sun protection since there is little shade.
Miles of graded multi-use roads let cyclists cover ground quickly across the grasslands. Visitors can explore the vast biodiversity of the state's largest dry prairie by foot, bike, or horse. Fat tires handle the sandy sections best.
Ranger-guided swamp-buggy tours cover terrain most visitors never reach, including remote prairie and seasonal wetlands. Tours run on a seasonal schedule and reservations are recommended. A great introduction for first-time visitors.
The preserve maintains an Equestrian Campground and dedicated horse trails across the prairie. Park facilities include a separate Equestrian Campground area with room for horse trailers. Riders should bring proof of negative Coggins test.
Primitive routes lead deep into the preserve's remote prairie and pine flatwoods. Multi-day hikers can string together backcountry campsites across open grassland. Navigation skills and ample water are essential.
Wide-open skies, golden grasses, and abundant wildlife make the preserve a favorite for landscape and nature photographers. Sunrise and sunset light the prairie in warm tones. Long lenses help with distant sparrows and caracaras.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, FL, United States
The preserve sits in rural Okeechobee County, about 45 minutes north of the city of Okeechobee and roughly two hours from Orlando, West Palm Beach, and Fort Myers. Access is via Peavine Road, a long unpaved county road, so RVers should drive slowly and watch for washboarding, potholes, and standing water after heavy rain. There are no mountain passes or tunnels, but low-clearance bridges and narrow rural roads on the approach warrant caution for larger rigs. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the most convenient option for fly-and-rent travelers.
