Lime Kiln Point State Park, WA, United States
Lime Kiln Point State Park is accessible only via Washington State Ferry from Anacortes, approximately 80 miles north of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a two-hour drive. Ferry crossings typically take 45 minutes to two hours depending on route stops at other San Juan islands. Once on San Juan Island, the park is located 12 miles from Friday Harbor via Westside Road, a 20-30 minute drive from the ferry terminal. RV renters should reserve ferries well in advance during peak season (May-September), as vehicle capacity is limited.
Peak orca viewing occurs from May through September when three Southern Resident pods frequent nearby Haro Strait during salmon migration. July and August provide the warmest, driest weather and the most reliable marine mammal sightings, with the interpretive center open from late May through early September. Shoulder seasons (April and October) feature fewer visitors and pleasant spring or fall conditions, though cooler temperatures and increased rainfall are common.

Southern Resident orca pods, along with minke whales, Dall's porpoises, and gray whales, can be viewed from shore during peak season. The park's location above 960-foot-deep Haro Strait brings marine mammals remarkably close for land-based viewing, with May through September offering the best sightings. parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lime-kiln-point-state-park
The restored 1919 lighthouse is open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and features interpretive displays about lighthouse history and marine research. The park's interpretive center operates seasonally from late May through early September with exhibits on whale behavior and conservation. parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lime-kiln-point-state-park
The park features more than 3 miles of self-guided trails connecting the Karen Munro Outlook to the lighthouse along the rocky shoreline. Trail signage explains local marine ecosystems, geology, and the park's historic lime kiln structures from the 1860s. parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lime-kiln-point-state-park
Visitors can explore rocky beaches and tidal zones accessible from the park, observing sea stars, anemones, and other intertidal species. Low tide periods offer the best opportunity to explore tide pools and coastal geology.
An underwater hydrophone located at the lighthouse allows visitors to hear orca vocalizations and whale songs in real time. This educational listening station, operated by SMRU Consulting and The Whale Museum, provides insight into marine mammal communication and behavior patterns. smruconsulting.com/lime-kiln-live-hydrophone
The park provides 18 picnic sites scattered along the shoreline with water, restrooms, and scenic viewpoints. Several locations offer unobstructed views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Channel. parks.wa.gov/find-parks/state-parks/lime-kiln-point-state-park
Scenic viewpoints throughout the park offer excellent opportunities for capturing wildlife and landscape photography. Peak whale-watching months (May-September) provide the highest likelihood of photographing orcas and other marine mammals.
