Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the most comfortable window for hiking and biking the trails. July and August bring the warmest, driest weather but also the busiest trail use on weekends. September and early October offer cooler temperatures, fewer bugs, and fall colour, making shoulder season ideal for RV travellers who want quieter roads and easier parking nearby.

The Long Lake Loop is a gravel fire-road route that circles the main lake and forms the park's signature hike. It offers mostly flat walking with water views and is suitable for most fitness levels. Expect several hours on foot to complete the full loop.
Long Lake is one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in the Halifax area. Wide gravel roads and side single-track trails suit cross-country riders and gravel bikes. Riders should yield to hikers and watch for loose rock on descents.
The park's mix of flat gravel roads and rolling single-track makes it a favourite local training ground for runners. Routes can be chained together for distances from a few kilometres up to a half-marathon. Bring water as there are no services inside the park.
Non-motorized paddling is permitted on Long Lake, though access requires a carry from the trailhead as there is no developed boat launch. Canoes and kayaks can explore the lake's quiet shoreline and small coves. Swimming is not allowed because the lake is a protected water source.
The park's lakes, bogs, and forest support loons, ospreys, herons, and warblers, along with deer and the occasional black bear. Early morning visits from the St. Margarets Bay Road trailhead are best for sightings. Binoculars are recommended for the quieter lake coves.
In winter the gravel roads transform into packed snowshoe and winter hiking routes. The flat terrain around Long Lake is accessible to beginners and offers quiet forest scenery after snowfall. Traction aids are useful on icy sections near the trailheads.
A quieter side route leads toward Cranberry Lake through mixed Acadian forest and granite barrens. It is less travelled than the main Long Lake loop and offers a more remote wilderness feel close to the city. Footing can be rough in wet weather.
We had the best time! The van was so cozy, we slept amazing! Dean and Tanis have thought of everything. It was so easy to get around and they were very helpful with directions and tips for our trip. We would rent this van again over and over that was so much fun. We called it our house.

We had a great time travelling around Cape Breton in this van! It had everything we needed and ran great. We definitely could have done a full week or more but we were happy with the time we had. Dean and Tannis were awesome and helped us out with whatever we needed. Thanks again!

We were looking for the ability to be flexible on our trip and this met all the requirements! It was a fabulous way to travel! I would highly recommend using Caroline's camper van to anyone!
Mary D. - Sep 2025
Caroline was an amazing host. The unit was very well stocked. She promptly (and patiently) answered our many questions. She was even available the next day so we could return and retrieve some items we left behind.

Long Lake Provincial Park, NS, Canada
The park entrance sits on the western edge of Halifax, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from downtown Halifax via Highway 103 and St. Margarets Bay Road. Dartmouth is about 30 minutes east across the harbour, and Truro is around 90 minutes north via Highway 102. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Halifax Stanfield International Airport, about 45 minutes northeast of the park. RV drivers should note that trailhead parking lots are small and not designed for large motorhomes, so travellers with longer rigs should park at a nearby campground and drive in with a tow vehicle or use rideshare.
